Harry Richman and Dick Merrill, the American trans-Atlantic fliers, took off from Southport at 3.5 a.in. on their return flight. Thousands cheered the fliers. Richman said that they had already ordered a dinner of steak and chips at New York, and they expected to eat it at 7 p.m. The airmen passed the Arran Islands at 5 a.m. Later a Montreal cable reported that the correspondent of the United Press at St. Johns (Newfoundland) had reported that Richman and Merrill had heen forced to bring their ’plane down in a marsh near the town at 2.20 p.m. (New York time) to-day.
