RELIEF COMMITTEE

APPLICANTS INCREASE. A meeting of the Palmerston North Central Relief Committee was held at the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, when there were present Mr A. E. Mansford (Mayor, in the chair), Messrs W. E. Winks, Robin Hood, K. G; Chamberlain (hon. secretary), P. 3. Larcomb (hon. treasurer), Adjutant Searle, Rev. Father Herlibv, Mesdamep Mansford, Aitchison ancf Hayward. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs H. Palmer, Messrs J. Hodgens, M.P., R. S. Abraham, R. L. C. Aitchison and A. A. Langley. The officer in charge ot the relief depot reported, under date September 7, as follows:—I beg to report that since the last meeting at the end of April the number being assisted at the depot has shown a steady increase. At the end of April the rations issued weekly totalled 160, and for last week they had increased to 260. There are quite a. number not drawing weekly rations, but are assisted with firewood, vegetables, boot repairs or clothing. Bread : 500 loaves were purchased last week from the Master Bakers’ Association. The price has increased to 5d per 21b loaf. A number of loaves are donated each week by Mr J. S. Jenkinson and Mr F. B. Shearman, and Mr J. Ellis sent in 20 loaves last week. Messrs Boniface Bros, send in buns a.nd scones each week. Butter: 1501 b are purchased weekly; the price rose to Is 4d last month, but is now down to Is 2d per lb. Vegetables and fruit: A few sacks of carrots and leeks were received from the community gardens last week. There are now no more vegetables at the gardens. Since February, 212 sacks of potatoes have been received from the gardens; 15 cases of apples were received from Miss Owtram. Milk : A number of famiilies are being supplied with milk daily. Firewood : 1644 bags of wood have been issued since the depot was opened early in June. Boot repairs: These average about 15 pairs weekly. There has been a sharp rise in the cost of leather. The officer in charge submitted a statement of the weekly cost of running the depot. Mr Langley’s report on the fuel depot was read and it was decided that the Mayor and Mr Langley have power to close down the depot when most convenient.

Accounts paid since last meeting totalling £696 Is 2d were confirmed and a further £lOl 16s 7d was passed for payment.
