CITY COUNCIL CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. “In reviewing the activities for the 1930-36 season, the committee have pleasure in reporting a most satisfactory year,” states tlie annual -report of the City Council Cricket Club. “Teams were entered in the senior and junior A competitions and, althougb unsuccessful in annexing either championship, the results were most encouraging and the club can look forward to greater success in the coming season. Our congratulations are extended to the Palmerston Ciub, winners of the senior championship, Kia Toa, winners of the junior A, and United, winners of the junior B competitions. We would also like to take this opportunity of congratulating C. McVicar on his splendid batting average of 63.77, thus winning the Justice and Edmunds Cup. “Senior team. —This is the second year in which we have contested championship honours in this grade. This year showed great improvement on last year’s form, the team climbing from the bottom rung to third on the championship ladder, and we had the pleasure of inflicting defeat on the winners and runners-up. Much of this success can be attributed to A. C. McVicar and G. Wheatley, also to the brilliant batting of C. McVicar with 574 runs (average 63.77). The bowling averages were headed by S. Baigent, who took 27 wickets at a cost of 10 runs apiece, but the brunt of the attack was borne by H. Nairn, who took 39 wickets at an average of 13,33. This team had the honour of scoring the most runs in one innings, namely, 298 for 8 wickets, also dismissing the opposition for the lowest score of 17 runs, much of the honour for the latter going to A. C. McVicar. who took 5 wickets for 1 run, which included the only ‘hat trick’ in the series. The trophy donated by Mr J. J. Stevenson for the best batting average was won by C. McVicar. We extend our congratulations to G. Wheatley and C. McVicar (Hawke Cup representatives), also H. Nairn, S. McVicar and J. Gnvey, who represented Manawatu on various occasions. Only two centuries were recorded during the season, both being registered by C. McVicar (103 a ltd 134 not out). “Junior A team. —It is unfortunate that such keenness and enthusiasm as were displayed by the junior A team during the season were not favoured with greater success. Several splendid individual efforts were registered, but the uncertainty of cricket seemed to be always against them. Three centuries were registered by members, those having the honour being B. Weston (126 and 122) and T. Lovejoy (105 not out). The batting averages were beaded by T. Lovejoy, closely followed by B. Weston with averages of 32.7 and 31.2 runs respectively. Bowling: In this department-, J. Burgess returned the best average with-11 wickets at a cost of 11.6 runs apiece, although B. Weston trundled well, taking 45 wickets at an average of 13.4. Mr AA’.L. Fitzherbert’s trophy for the most improved junior player was won by J. B. Thompson. We extend our congratulations to T. Lovejoy, who represented Manawatu in this grade. “Finance.—The club’s finances are in a very excellent position. Although nearly £l9 was expended on new material, the income and expenditure account discloses a most satisfactory credit balance. The committee’s thanks are due to Mr Waugh, our treasurer, for his untiring energies, also Mr W. McLeod, and Mr A. Matthews, who rendered excellent assistance. The committee wish to place on record the assistance rendered to the cluh bv the officers, (especially Mr A. E. Mansford, also the Press, Messrs W. McLeod and L. G. Igardie (official scorers) and others who assisted throughout the season. The tha.nks of the club are clue to the ladies who so kindly assisted with the afternoon tea arrangements and we desire to place on record our appreciation of their services. We ako wish to express our thanks to the Umpires’ Association and hope that the association will long continue as a. flourishing body. We thank members for their support and wish to impress upon them the necessity for making every effort during the forthcoming season to further the interest of their club.” BATTING AND BOWLING SENIOR.
