TRADE DISPUTE.
STILL NO PROGRESS
CANBERRA, July 15
Despite cables from Tokio hinting that Japan, through resenting Australia’s tariff action, is nevertheless prepa red to resume trade negotiations, Sir Henry Gullett (Minister in Charge of Trade Treaties) said to-night that he had no idea when to expect an official communication from Japan. He expressed the hope on behalf of the Government that the Japanese Government would reply within a few days as to whether they ire re prepared to reopen negotiations on the present basis or after the suspension of discriminatory trade action. The ambiguity of Tokio cables is causing much speculation at Canberra, where the suggestion is put forward that Japan may be putting out feelers in an effort to learn whether Australia is likely to weaken on her recent decision to impose heavy duties on Japanese textiles.
