STOWAWAY ON CARGO BOAT

FIVE DAYS’ FAST

Received July 15, 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 15,

The Golden State, has arrived from Wellington. While the ship was at Wellington a man aged 21 stowed away. He lived for five days without food and water, as he had expected tho vessel would take about four days to reach Australia and estimated that he could live for that time without food or water. Actually the ship took nine days on tho voyage. The stowaway hid in a pile of ropes in the storeroom. Soon after putting to sea the Golden State met heavy weather and took nearly three days to go 70 miles. The stowaway remained hidden thioughout the gale, cramped and almost exhausted. On tho fifth day he staggered on deck. Tho police detained the stowaway and he will remain in custody until Saturday, when he will be taken back to New Zealand.
