SAMOAN MAU.
IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 15. The leader of the Samoan Mau (Hon. O. F. Nelson) boarded the Maui Pomare to-day on his return to Apia. In a farewell message he said he would do whatever he could to bring about a lasting and amicable settlement. It might be necessary for both sides to practice a little give-and-take. but there would certainly be a better understanding in future. •Mr Nelson 6aid the previous Government had regarded the Mau as rebellious, but by a change of outlook a more reasonable interpretation of the Samoan point of view had now been obtained. The Mau flag had been converted into a flag of conciliation and with that, and the other changes made, the prospects were hopeful for the establishment of mutual goodwill and confidence.
