meeting of council. The monthly mooting of the Kairanga County Council was held yesterday, tho chairman (Cr. D. Collis) presiding over the following members: Crs. E. J. Russell, N. P. Nielsen, W. R. Hopcroit. Jos. Batelielar, ’l. D. Lynch, M. W. -Moss, J. Smith, and W. G. Shannon. COR R ESPON D ENC E. The town clerk, Pelone, ‘ forwarded a resolution passed by the Petone Borough Council regarding the hospital levy. Tho resolution stated that the incidence of taxation should bo reviewed as an urgent matter in tho direction of relieving ratepayers and that the Municipal Association should be urged to make representations on the subject to the Government. The idea was supported by members, and a motion to that effect was carried. The Manawatu Kucing Club wrote drawing the attention of the council to tho inconvenience and discomfort caused to the residents of College Street West and the public on race days owing to the road from Botanical' Boat! to Maxwell’s Line not being sealed. They asked that the work be proceeded with.. Owing to tho estimates having been passed, it was decided that nothing could be done this year, though the subject would be borne in mind next year, ibe letter was received. , The director of the lech meal School (Mr G. G. Hancox) wrote thanking the council for a donation of £lO towards tho school funds.— Received. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking for tho co-operation of the council in a suitable celebration of Arbor Day, on August s.—Received. The ranger reported that lie had found 105 head of straying cattle. The report was received . A letter was read from the Mmister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) rconrding his proposed Bill to improve conditions and protect life on the roads of the country. . , .. Cr. Shannon said the Minister should bo congratulated on the stand lie was taking to protect human life. The chairman said the Minister was makin" a determined stand and deserveifthcir thanks, and it was decided to send him a letter of congratulation. WANDERING STOCK. Tho Manawatu Automobile Association wrote drawing-the council’s attention to tlie fact that waii-dcmvK stock were a menace on the main road at Tiakitahuna, especially between 10 p.m. and midnight, and suggested that the council’s ranger should patrol tho roads at night. The chairman said the ranger hail done good work and was prepared to go out at all hours of the night. Allowance should be made to fai inel’s in flood time, but generally wandenng cattle at night should not be tolerated. Cr Lynch said he had driven through another county at night and bad met several mobs of cattle. He did not think allowance should be made to residents even in flood time, us the chairman suggested. The chairman said he was referring chiefly to by-roads. Cr Shannon said that during the last flood fanners had to move their stock at night. Cr Lynch said lives were in danger with ■ wandering cattle_ at night, .and protection should be given. Cr Nielsen said he had not seen anv stock wandering at liakitaliuna since the flood. . It was decided to receive the letter. The Automobile Association drew attention to the fact that a number of signs in the county bad been erected for a number of years and were beginning to rust. They offered to recondition the signs with tho. council’s permission. , Permission was granted to renew the signs and the association thanked for tlieir offer. GENERAL. It was decided that a report be tabled of the cost of tar-sealing the roads throughout the county and that the information bo forwarded to the Miniser of Public Works as soon as possible.
