DEBATING SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Club was held last evening. The first part of the programme was taken up by prepared speeches. Those taking part weie: Messrs A. McArley, C. Aikman, 1. -Vlty Mrs Smidt, Miss Wilson, Mr G. Brown and Mr J. Hornblow All gave very interesting talks on their allotted subjects. The debate “That the Press has a Greater Influence Ilian the Platform,” was the second part of the programme. Those taking part were- Messrs M. Davidson, B. G. Cox, L McDonald, T. M. McPhec, te. Laurence and L. Parlane. The subject proved most interesting, and alter a well fought debate the decision was given to the, affirmative by a. narrow margin. All those taking part ill the debate are this year’s ir.eml>ers and are to be congratulated on their excellent effort. Two challenge debates were accepted, as follow: That Conferring of Titles Should in Future be Abolished”; “That Animals Have a Definite Power of Reasoning. Ihese aro to be included in a future programme. The Piccadilly Model was awarded to Mrs Smidt and Mr Lauren son, «qual . for the best effort of the evening. Mr Haitly was heaitilj thanked for adjudicating and his helpful criticism. There were over iorty members and visitors present.
