CYCLIST KILLED
STRUCK BY TRUCK. COLLISION AT CORNER. Injuries to which ho succumbed "* little over an hour .niterwards were sustained by Mr Walter Joseph Reynolds. aged' Go, who resided at 334 Broadway Avenue, in an. accident which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday in Church Street at the middle of the intersection between the Grand Hotel and the Council Chambers. v _ .. Deceased had just left the Council Chambers on his cycle when lie was struck by a breakdown service wagon of Messrs Justice and Ltd., which was driven by Mr Joseph Eckerslev, a mechanic, and had just turned into the intersection by the traffic dome. Apparently seeing the vehicle coming, the cyclist had swerved, his front wheel had locked, and he was caught by the left-hand side ol the wagon, a front wheel passing over him. Deceased was jambed in the wreckage of his cycle between the front wheels of the vehicle, which had to be lilted to allow him to be extricated. He was seen to be very seriously injured and, after receiving medical attention, was removed by the Free Ambulance to the Palmerston North Hospital, where lie passed away at 5.15 from severe head injuries. The driver of the wagon collapsed when standing at the scene of the accident, but inter recovered and was removed to his home. The Jate Mr Reynolds, who was highly respected, and a devoted member of the staff of Messrs G. H. Bennett, and Coy., was born in England, and came to New Zealand about 25 vears ago, first residing in Auckland. He was well-known in business circles in the city and was a member, of St. Paul’s Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs Jacobsen, of Wellington, and a son, Mr H. Reynolds, of Wallaccville.
