MISCELLANEOUS CASES. YESTERDAY’S SITTING. Air J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Alagisti;ate’s G'ourt at Palmerston North yesterday. Margaret Whale, alias Alargaret Agnes Whale, alias Peggy Waite, a domestic, aged 23, of Palmerston North, was, charged that, on June 2. vat Levin, she obtained a pair of shoes and a pair of slippers, of a total value of 18s 2d, from If. Hannah and Co., bv falsely representing that the goods were for Airs W. Penny, of_ Waitarere. She was also charged with obtaining goods valued at £2 5s lOd from W. AI. Clarke, Ltd., by a similar false pretence. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Detective Barling said accused had been working for Afrs Penny, and had obtained the goods by false pretences, but on July 4 disappeared from her employment. She was a married woman and bad boon discharged from the Borstal institution on .June 6. Her parents would have nothing to do with her. Accused asked not to be sent back to the Borstal. She was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to he cumulative.

Ernest William Baker pleaded guilty to charges: (1) That, on May 30, at Rauniai, he stole a pair of shoes valued at 10s, the property of Eon Neill; (2) that, on May 31, at Jtaumai, lie stole an electric soldering iron valued at 2s 6d, the property of J. D. Banner; (3) that, on April 6, at Rauniai, lie stole a lady’s handbag valued at ss, the property of some person unknown. Detective Bailing said accused had committed the offences while employed in the district. Accused asked for the suppression of his name. “They always ask for that,” commented the Magistrate in refusing and ordering accused to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon.

BY-LAW CASES. For driving a car with only cue headlight, C. Shirriffs (Wanganui) was fined £l. with 10s costs. T. Kelly (Tokomaru) and B. Peni (Foxton-Shannon Road) were each fined os, with 10s costs, for cycling at night without lights. A penalty of £l,'with 10s costs, was imposed on E. Radomski for driving an unliglited car at night. Stated to he £l6l 10s in arrears on a maintenance order, Walter Gerald Emeny, of New Plymouth, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment,

the warrant tc be suspended as j eng as the current order is complied with. Ail order, for maintenance at tno rate of 10s a week for his wife and 10s each for his two children vs-, made against William Edward kto- 1 terv, of Paraparaumau, on the. complaint of Alary Ann Slattery, Ol'Rongot<?a‘ CHARGE DISAIISSED, Kenneth Richard Grayson,- of Dan* nevirke, pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor-cycle on Alay 10, at the intersection;of Albert and Ferguson Streets, at fa speed which, having regard to allcumstances, might have been diulgeious to the public. Senior-Sergeant Moriarty stated that defend:sht, was alleged to have been travelling at between 40 and 45 miles an hour. He was involved in a collision and' suffered a broken collarbone. His sister, who was on the pillion seat, sustained head injuries, and both had to he removed to the Hospital, Hubert Ross, a milkman, the other party concerned in the collision, estimated defendant’s speed at 40 miles an hour, and lloyden Potb.ury, another witness, estimated it at 25 miles ail hour. Defendant said his motor-cycle was not capable of doing more thaii 30 miles ail hour. His speed at the intersection was 15 miles an hour, and there ; would have been no collision if; Ross had given way. The Alugistrate dismissed the charge. /
