RUGBY REFEREES.
MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. Mr E. W. Low presided on Friday over the weekly meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Referees’ Association. Also present were Messrs A. Gordon, O'. Taylor, A. Neville, M. Bailey, A. Weston, J. Baker, L. G. Berry, C. Pinfold, J. Pinfold, C. Woodliam, C. Eglinton, F. Petre, A. Ward, P. A\ augh, G. Duthie, F. Tucker, L. J. Plank and J. H. White. Apologies.tor absence were received from Messrs J. Burgess and It. Akuira. The ltangitikci Association advised that for the interchange of referees Messrs It. Rivers and A. Cliainey would come to Palmerston North on July 18. The chairman reported that Messrs Weston and Taylor would represent the association on that date at Raugitikei. The Bush Union wrote asking that Mr A. Ward be appointed to control the Bebbington Shield match against Dannevirke on July 15. Mr Ward agreed to the request. Mr Taylor brought up the question of players being ordered off the field, and the penalties inflicted by the union. To his mind, he said, the union’s backing of the referees was not sufficient. He was not attacking the union. Perhaps referees had ordered off players when a caution wou’d have been sufficient. A discussion of the matter would'lead to more uniformity amongst the referees.
, Messrs Low, Berry, and Plank were in agreement that the union at all times had backed up the referees. The only points on which there was always a difference of opinion was the penalty that should be inflicted.
With reference to a third grade player recently ordered off, Mr Ward moved and Mr C. Pinfold seconded, that the discussion be deferred until the referee concerned (Mr' J. Burgess) was present.
