PIG BREEDERS

MANAWATU-OROUA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of tlie Mana-watu-Oroua branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association was held on Saturday, Mr O. C. Elicnn presiding. Also present were Messrs J. A. Russell, \V. L. West, W. P. Bickers, E. P. Nielsen, W. A. Davison, T. Conway, C. S. Hunt, H. M. Mansell, and FI. E. Thurston. A letter was received from the secretary of the Manawatu-Oroua division of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs stating that he had been instructed to write to all the organisations interested in the work of the clubs requesting the nomination of two representatives to form the controlling executive. He desired to know the names of the two representatives the branch were appointing . —lt was decided to appoint Messrs Bickers and Thurston.

The Berkshire Cup, won by the Cheltenham Dairy Co. at the recent Manawatu A- and P. Show for the best bacon exhibit, was shown by the secretary and a vote of congratulation was accorded the company by acclamation. Mr Thurston suitably responded. There was a possibility of the trophy being replaced, lie said. A vote of thanks was accorded those who had given items and rendered assistance at the farewell function to Mr C. P. McMeekati.

Mr Russell pointed out that the main reason for the meeting was to decide what was to be done about the date of the Waikato Show, which was going to clash with that of the Manawatu Show. He thought that if the Waikato authorities were promised pig exhibits from Palmerston North they would be induced to change their date. Members contended, however, that it would he hard for the Waikato Association to change their date without clashing with some other fixture of a similar nature. After a further discussion it was resolved tto advise tlio Waikato Association that, provided they were willing to change the date of their Show, the branch would arrange to exhibit with them. The secretary and Mr Russell were appointed to go into the matter. It was decided that the Director of Agriculture bo written to asking that it he made compulsory for freezing works killing for export companies to supply the farmers with sheets showing the weight and grade of animals killed.
