TOBACCO INDUSTRY.
MINIMUM PRICE FIXATION
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 4. The question of fixation of a minimum price for raw tobacco was an item of major importance considered by the Tobacco Board at its recent meeting and it was decided to recommend to the Government that a minimum price be fixed for all leaf purchased by manufacturers during the season ended March 31, 1937. A point was raised in regard to the applicability of a levy of Id per lb. on raw tobacco sold by growers to leaf held over from the 1934-35 season, in accordance with the provisions of the Tobacco Growing Industry Act, 1935. The levy is applicable to all raw tobacco sold. A further question also arose as to whether or not the levy should apply to raw tobacco exported from New. Zealand. The board decided that all tobacco leaf, whether for manufacture in New Zealand or for export, should be subject to the levy.
