WOMEN’S SINGLES

SEMI-FINAL WINNERS. MRS SPERLING AND MISS JACOBS. AUSTRALIANS LOSE IN DOUBLES

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 3, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, July 2.

The semi-finals of the women’s singles were played at Wimbledon today, when Mrs Sperling (Denmark) and Miss Helen Jacobs (United States) emerged to contest the final. Mrs Sperling entered the final after a soporific match of long baseline rallies. Mine Mathieu was exhausted in the second set by her opponent’s inartistic but safe and tireless game. There was more vitality about the other semi-final. Miss Jacobs breaking up Miss Jedrezejowska’s harddriving game by chops which the Pole repeatedly over-hit. Australia’s last hope in the men’s doubles rested in the hands of McGrath and Sproulc. The small centre court crowd found nothing to enthuse over. The Americans, Allison and Van Ryn, without effort won in straight sets. Sproule’s overhead work was very weak. Borotra and Brugnon comfortably beat the American. Cunningham, and the Japanese, Itoh, but during the match Borotra ran into the stop netting and injured a leg. He continued in pain, not awaiting medical advice as to whether he should withdraw.
