COLLEGE ST. SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. AILMENTS AFFECT ATTENDANCE. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening. Colonel J. H. Whyte presiding. Others present were Messrs E. Persson (secretary), H. G. Mills, W. F. Cutler. E. Cruickshunk, E. A. Shac--kleton and J. Creighton. The acting-headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) reported that the average attendance had been affected hv an epidemic of whooping cough in the lower part of the school, the average attendance having been 447 out of a roll number of 611. During the month the medical officer, Dr. E. Gunn, had made her periodical examination of the children in the various classes. She had reported favourably on the health and appearance of the pupils. The Minister of Education (Hon. P. Eraser), the Director of Education (Mr N. T. Lambourne) and other educational officers had paid the school n visit. The bottle collection in aid of the school funds had been quite successful, having realised £6 16s 6d. The half-yearly examinations were at present being conducted.
Formal notification was received from the Wanganui Education Board of the biennial election of members. There ii no election for the Palmerston North urban area. Colonel Whyte having been returned unopposed. Mr Cutler congratulated the chairman on his re-election, stating that it was an important position, and he had filled it with the utmost ability.
Following an inquiry made concerning the prospects of securing a radio set for the school, advice was received from the Minister of Education that seheols could obtain them at a cost considerably below ordinary . retail prices. The procedure was outlined in the Education Gazettes of October, 1034. Apart from this concession no grants were made for the purpose. The chairman reported that three sumps were being installed in the school grounds to improve the drainage facilities.
