AMERICAN CROPS.
AFFECTED BY DROUGHT. WASHINGTON, July 1. AVhile the Weather Bureau has reported that the present drought in the central and north-west is more critical than those of 1930 and 1934 were at this time of the year, officials stated that unless general rains come in the next fortnight to save the maize crop the Government may £ace the necessity of buying cattle for slaughter as it did during the 1934 drought, when 7,000,000 head were purchased.' President Roosevelt has ordered a study.of employment possibilities for farmers by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, which has modified its 193(3 soil, conservation programme to encourage farmers to plant more food and feed crops to offset the present losses.. The Bureau of Agriculture and Economics lias reported that world wheat stocks are the lowest in nine years. The American wheat carry-over of 125,000,000 bushels- is' the smallest since July 1, 1928. The surplus of the principal exporting countries is 388,0U0,G00 bushels, compared with 532,000,000 last year and 789,000,000 in 1933. FLOODS IN TEXAS. LOSS OF LIFE. SAN ANTONIO, July 1. Thirteen persons are known to he dead, including nine members of two families, a*nd it is believed that 20 others may have perished in floods which have swept Southern Texas, reducing many homes to driftwood and destroying crops and live stock valued at 1,000,000 dollars. An all-night deluge of rain, totalling 14 inches in one area, turned placid creeks into raging torrents sweeping everything before them.
