SHEARERS’ WAGES.
AWARD IN AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, June 26. Chief Justice Dethbridge, delivering judgment in the shearers’ claims, granted substantial increases, but did not award the full claims of the Australian Workers’ Union, of which the shearers and cooks are members. Rates for shearing rams are increased from 60s to 65s per 100, for stud ewes and lambs from 37s 6d to 40s 6d, the crutching rate from 6s to 6s 6d and wigging and ringing rates in proportion. Shearers’ cooks will be paid 7s 7d for each man cooked for instead of 7s. The weekly rate ior cooks will be 78s, with keep. The executive of the Australian Workers’ Union regards Judge Dethbridge’s award as fairly satisfactory, and is advising all members to accept it. It is expected that the agitation for a general strike will now lade away. 1
