CONFERENCE REMITS

ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY. A WIDE RANGE. Many subjects affecting the primary industries of New Zealand are due for discussion at the conference of the Royal Agricultural Society, which opens in Wellington on July 1. These cover legislation, uniform control of A. and P. Shows and the rules of the society. Among the remits dealing with legislation those of principal interest are as follow: “That representations he made to the Government, urging upon it the necessity for introducing legislation which would give stock owners a safeguard in respect to the standard in quality of stock foods offered for sale.” —N.Z. Pig Breeders’ Association. “That this society views with apprehension the proposal of the Government to take over the whole of the primary products of the country.”— Corriedale Sheep Society. “That the system of valuation be altered so that the added value given to the land from improvements effected thereon by the owner or tenant be credited to them, and l>e kept apart and distinct from the unimproved value.” —Kaikoura A. and P. Association. CONTROL OF SIDESHOWS. “That the Royal Agricultural Society be asked to bring into immediate effect rules and regulations in compliance with the Sideshow Control Act, 1933, providing for one license to be issued to each showman operating in New Zealand; such licenses to be issued by one controlling body, viz., the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, assisted by the metropolitan shows and the Police Department. Licenses to lie for the term of one year, and may bo cancelled or suspended by resolution of any one of the affiliated A. and P. Associations where such licensee carries on his business; after enquiry, the council to reserve the right to cancel the license for the whole or part of the unexpired period for which such license was issued.” —Northern District Council.

GENERAL. “That the date of collecting the annual sheep returns should he changed from April 30 to June 30.” —Canterbury A. and P. Association. “That the date for dipping should be extended to Julie 30.” —Canterbury A. and P. Association. “That in the annual sheep returns provision should lie made for showing the number of ewe lambs retained in the flock for breeding purposes.” — Canterbury A. and P. Association. “That steps he taken to establish an unpaid forfeit list on which the names of all conipetitors-exhibitors failing to pay show charges shall be placed, and that the competitor-exhibitor whose name appears on the list shall not he allowed to compete or exhibit at any show or competitions under the socibty’s jurisdiction, until such time as tlie fees due are paid.” —Waipukurau A. and P. Association. EMBARGO ON STUD STOCK. Conflicting views are expressed in remits dealing with the embargo on stud stock importations. Some of them are as follow: “That the Government- be urged to remove the present restrictions on the importation of live stock from Britain.” —Masterton A. and P. Association. “That the Government be asked to allow the direct importation of stock to New Zealand from Great Britain.” —Southdown Sheep Society of New Zealand.

“That the embargo be not lifted on the direct importation of live stock from countries affected with foot and mouth disease.” —Matamata A. and P. Association. “That the Government be requested to lift the embargo on the direct importation of stud stock from Great Britain or, alternatively, that they make provision for subsidising the cost of importing stud stock from Great Britain via.
