FIRE BOARD AJEETJNG. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, June 17. The quarterly meeting of the AVoodvillc Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, the Alayor (Air H. P. Horne) presiding. Those present were Messrs H. Galbraith (Borough Council representative), W. Cl. Ilav, J. \V. Nome, D. Keay (secretary), and Superintendent II N. McNeil. Leave of absence was granted Air A. 11. Hustwick and the secretary was instructed to write wishing him a speedy recovery from his illness. The 'superintendent's report for the quarter read: —Six practices have been held and attendances have been good. A call was received to a chimney fire on June 4. Mr If. Lawn was elected a member of the brigade on Alay 25. The Postmaster-General (Hon. F. Jones) wrote replying to a request from the board that the rental for the telephone at the fire station he assessed at the residential rate. It was stated that, as the residential rate was restricted to telephones installed purely for social or philanthropic purposes, the department could not consider the request.-—Mr Hay said it was ridiculous that the telephone could not he rated differently as it was used only a few times during the year. He believed that the only way to clear up the matter would be to circularise fire hoards, and a united should be made. He suggested to the superintendent that an approximate tally of calls for the next quarter lie made and that the board make another application to the department. This course was decided upon.

It was left to the local committee to procure a wash-basin and hath for the brigade’s sleeping quarters, while it. was decided to purchase a salvage sheet through the Damtevirko hoard.

Leave of absence from the next meeting was granted the Alayor, members expressing the hope that his health-recruiting trip would he an enjoyable one. PLUNKET SOCIETY. A meeting of the Woodvill© sub-branch of the Phuket Society was held on Alonday afternoon, Mrs If, P. Horne presiding. A vote of thanks was accorded tho Borougli Council for a donation of £2 10s. Tho secretary (Mrs L. J. Whittington) was instructed to pay tho half-yoarly levy of £l2 10s when it became due. After a discuss cn it was resolved that a house-to-house canvass he made to raise funds for the Branch. Mrs AV. Galbraith was ap pointed to represent AVoodville at tho meeting of tho Pahiatua branch committee during tho absence of tho president. The nurse reported as follows for the months of Alarch, April cud May:—Visits to homes 10. v:sits of adults to room 142, visits of babies to room 156, visits of older children 18, new babies, 9. Owing to the whooping-cough epidemic, many baliies wero under medical attont on and these were not allowed to visit the rooms until all danger of infection was past. WOAIEN’S INSTITUTE. At the monthly meeting of the Ngawapurua Women’s Institute Mrs Coulter, presided. Mrs E. J. P. Simpson, of AYoodville, .gave an interesting dcmonslrat'on on papier-mache work and was accorded a vote of thanks. In the competition for paper flowers, Mrs Coulter was first and Airs AWlliams second. Mrs llofe and Mrs Erickson were first and second, respectively, in the cggless fruit oako competit'on. The number of entries was large and the standard was generally high. The roll call, “Sing, say or a penny pay,” caused much amusement. It was advised that the junior members were forming an entertainment circle. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames J. Singers, J. Ilanar'ay, Alorgan and WilPams. AVINTRY WEATHER.

Persistent rain fell all day yesterday until late at night, and as a result rivers and creeks in the district were at a high level. Low-lying land along the Alasterton Road was flooded in many places last night, while on various roads in tile county suriace water was deep. However, the rain abated and to-day the waters had subsided considerably. Mr H. W. Kelby, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs E. Mart'll, Papalawa. Mr L. J. Ilayos, Cross Creek, is vis ting his parents in Woodville. Mr E. Martin, of Papatawa, who underwent an operation in the Dannevirke Hospital on Sunday, is making steady progress toward recovery. The friends of Mrs H. Hill will regret to learn that she has had to enter the Dannevirke Hospital.
