VIEWS OF ABYSSINIA
REQUEST TO THE LEAGUE. STRONG COLLECTIVE ACTION. (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 18, 12.20 p.m. LONDON, June 1/. In a letter to the Times, Dr. Martin, the Abyssinian representative, sets out the views of the Abyssinian Government. Firstly, lie requests of the League of Nations that at least a majority of its members should, in accordance with the obligations of the Covenant, take strong effective action collectively to support the indcpendence of Ethiopia, niicl. should icfuse recognition of the Italian annexation by aggression ; but if the League does liot find itself strong enough to make the aggressor evacuate Ethiopia, the next best thing, lie says, is to give the Ethiopian Government a loan sufficient to enable Abyssinia to fight her own battle against the aggressor. This will confine the trouble to the two parties. “If neither of these solutions is acceptable and the extinction of Ethiopia is allowed, all I can say is that the prestige of the present members of the League of Nations will also go down in history to the lowest level,” Dr. Martin adds..
ITALIAN BAIT.
RECOGNITION OF AMBASSADORS. Received June 18, 11.50 a.m. ROME, June 17. It is reported that Signor Suvich is being appointed Ambassador at AVasliington. This, and other ambassadorial changes pending, raise the question of recognition of the conquest of Abyssinia, as the new Ambassadors are certain to present their credentials as coming from the King of Italy and Emperor of Abyssinia.
