WANGANUI MEETING. USEFUL FIELDS. TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS. (By “Spectator.”) Good fields arc engaged to-morrow i the opening day of the Wanganui Jock* Club’s winter meeting, and there shou be some spirited racing. Thirteen have bet. paid up for in the Empire Handicap, including Onewhetu and Prostration, and the running of these two will be followed with interest. The Century Hurdles and Grandstand Steeplechase, the two jumping events on the programme, should provide good contests. The first race will start at noon and the programme and a review of the fields follow.

Apart from Donegal, Cometra, and Prince Reno the Bracelet has drawn an inexperienced lot. Donegal failed at Auckland and may do better here. Cometra was second to Taillight in a similar class at Mart on, where Prince Reno was unplaced. The latter has worked well at Awapuni. -Most support may be accorded: Cometra, Prince Reno. 12.40

i Dialomous is back to sprinting after hav- ! ing a race or two over a middle distance, j He has a big weight, but should be show- » ing up at the finish. Mid inn is also down | to contest the Empire Handicap, and is rej ported to have improved. Gold Mission will J carry strong support. She failed at Auekj land, but was a good third to Puss Moth ; and Tooloy Street at To Rapa. Dungarvan ; has been kept in steady work at. Awapuni since Easter and he is in great order. Mother Superior may need a race. Limuhu* failed at Hawera, but the heavy track was against her. She should he in the fighting line at the finish. Land Tax lias not shown her best form for come time, but is liable to spring a surprise. Three who may be, in demand are: Limulus, Diatornous, Dungarvan

Soloist hats a big burden to carry in the Century Hurdles, but he its a solid jumper despite his failure at Auckland, and he will be in demand. Chile is a rcliab*e jumper and his success on the flat at Otaki points to his fitness. Speed has been ► scratched. Manawatu lias not been seen at his best in recent outings, but Silk Sox’s second at Hawera and third at

Te Rapa were promising eilorts. Ruaiorm was third at Hawera. Sporting Song was a winner at Auckland recently. If Glcnvano were to repeat hits training eilorts he would go well here.' The favourites may be: Chile, Silk Sox, Soloist. 2.0

A big field will line up for the Balgownie Hack Handicap, but the form of the majority of the entrants is poor. Mustang beat a big field at Auckland recently, while Hunting Queen won hack cups at Egmont and Marton. Le Grand won his last race at Te Rapa. Teddy Boy was second to Sporting Song over hurdles at Ellcrslie. Corowa looks the best of the others. When the totalisator closes iavourtism should rest between: Hunting Queen, Mustang, Le Grande. 2.40

Cotsfield is engaged av Napier l’ark, but if produced licro be will bo in request, as ho is a fine jumper and will bo improved a great deal as a result of bis success at Hastings. Tangled was a good winner at Ellerslie and with only 9.9 should run a sound race. \\ indsor. Lad was aLo a winner at the recent Auckland meeting. Spalpiko ran third to Diamond and Roxy at Te Rapa, but was a tong way back, qver a bundled vards. Debut, Invictus, and Kaola have done nothing to point to their holding winning prospects. The bulk of the money may be on: Cotsfield. Tangled, XX indsor Lad. 3.20

A strong field of middle-distance performers is down to contest the Empire Handicap, with Onewhetu. hero of many recent races, including the Cornwall Handicap, holding pride of place with 9.8 Next follows Prostration, with three wins, two seconds, and a third in as many starts to his credit since Easter. Those two arc both booked for the Winter Cup and. their form will be of interest to a largo circle of admirers Hazoor and Gay Boy were both winners at Otaki. West Tor’s form at Carterton suggested an early success Sid J eter Jackson may spring a surprise Davistock was fourth at Otaki and Ins fall-m weight should see him running to advantage. There are some others nicely weighted, including Alchemic, Clarion Call, and lahurangi, but when the totalisator has closed the favourites may bo: Prostration, Onewhetu, Hazoor.

Another big field will line up for the Borough Hack Handicap, and there may be a surprise. Triune is an Auckland hack that' was recently reported to have gone in the wind. He is very speedy and should nm a smart six furlongs. Bantry gave indications of returning to form recently and ills prospects will have to be. considered First Chapter is m form, while Happy Hunting was a good winner at Foxton Waipiro, if she would do her best, would run well in this field. Night Spi and Garter Red have bettor than out.ndc chances. Golden Rill and Script appeal most of the others. The best backed nay be: First Chapter, Happy Hunting, Bantry. ENGLISH-BREtT HORSES. Several of the horses imported to Australia from England last year wore ex-, nceted to cam winning honours on the tuif prior to going to the stud, but Manitoba, nrior to going to he stud, but Manitoba, u Manna and Bcrestoi, by Bcresford, % only ones that were called upon to carry silk, failed to score. , The former n nt pul* persevered nith. and Bciy slof who it wis fondly hoped, might win ’ I ~a ce has now been withdrawn.
