CARNARVON

(From Our Own Correspondent. ) CARNARVON, Juie 16. On Saturday afternoon the first game of hockey on the local ground this season was played. Hie teams wore Co.yton and Carnarvon A. From the bultv-off Carnarvon attacked strongly, but the visitors’ defence was too solid. With, but few excursions to midfield, Colyton remained on the defence until half-time, with no score recorded. The shooting of the homo team’s' forwards was bad. Tile second half was a repetition of the first, although a few minutes before time Mrs Griffin and Miss Marjory Quinlan succeeded in getting Carnarvon’s oniy goal. A few m nutes later time was called, leaving Carnarvon the winners by one goal to nil. Miss Jean Telford, in goal, was outstanding for Colyton, while Avis Teague showed up well for Carnarvon. MclCelvie. who have been on a motor tour of the South Island, return home th s week. , The monthly meet’ng of the 'Women s Institute was held last week, when Mrs Will presided. It was decided to ho'd a function in August, when the birthday of the institute will bo celebrated. The entertainment will be held n the evening and no charge will be made but a collection to defray expenses will be taken up. A list of names of children in the Jubilee Blind Institute and the dates of their birthdays was given to members, ;iid those who wish to do so may write to those children. A demonstration on basket-making was given by Mrs Tricker. The competition for the month knitting for ten minutes, was won bv Mrs J. Warren. The hostesses, Mesdames Goldfinch and Pedley and Misses B. Roeve and N. Scott, served afternoon tea.
