CITY BAND

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Palmerston North City Band met recently, those present being Messrs P. V. Burns (iu the chair), A. Tonkin, E. Low, G. Potter, T. Dennison, 11. Jackson, F. Lo Cheminant, 11. McCulloch, J. Cosgrove, C. Boyce, M. Gillespie, C. Meehen, \\ . O’Hara (conductor) and the secretary. Air Burns tendered a welcome to Mr Tonkin, a new member of the committee. An apology for absence was received from Mr C. N. Rabone (president), who was unavoidably absent. A large quantity of inward correspondence was received including a letter from Mr J. Compton, musical director of the Cairns Band, in connection with tho band’s visit, and outward correspondence was confirmed. A letter from Air C. H. Greening, notifying bis retirement from active band work, was received with regret, and it was resolved to elect him a life member of the band. Notification of bis retirement from the committee owing to iinforeseen circumstances was received, with regret, from Mr V. E. Cocks.

Owing to the shortage of instruments and the increased applications for the junior band it was decided to endeavour to purchase several instruments in the near future.

Mr H. Jackson was elected a vicepresident of the band, on the' motion of the secretary, seconded by Air McCulloch.

It was decided to endeavour to bold a Sunday night concert at an early date.

An application from the Takaro Scouts lor the use of the band room wn.s received and it was decided to allow them the use of the room on one night each week. Alter a full discussion, it was decided to pay the conductor £IOO per year. It is the intention of the committee to have further improvements to the hall carried out, thereby making it more comfortable during the winter months.

On the motion of Air Cosgrove, seconded by Mr Meehen, it was decided to endeavour to procure a photograph of all previously elected conductors ot the hand, these to be placed in the band room. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Air Dennison for his donation of a music stand. Accounts amounting to £5 2,s 3d were passed for payment.
