BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. ' (From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, June 12. The Mayor (Mr H. .R. Horne) presided over the following councillors at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council held last night.:—Messrs R. Bly, C. Forbes, A. Olsson, F. Shearman, J. Sullivan, R. R. Johnston, and H. Galbraith. A letter was received from the Department of Health advising that for the year ended March 31, 1936, there were four eases of infectious diseases in the borough. Six new sewer connections had beeif made, food premises had been inspected at regular intervals, and the inspector regarded the sanitary condition of the borough as satisfactory. In about three weeks’ time Mr Lawrence Bcavis, of Auckland, intends leaving for Wellington on a model travelling ship, playing the guitar to raise funds to build a Gospol ship. In a letter to the council, the writer asked for permission to play music in the streets of Woodville. He anticipated arriving in Woodville about August or September. Permission was granted. Tho Dannevirke Electric Power Board stated that at its annual meeting the council’s request for a reduction in street lighting charges had come up for dieussion. It was regretted that at the present time the board was unable to accede to tho request. The Mayor said that it would bo necessary to enter upon a fresh agreement. He had done his best at the meet--1 ing of the board to secure a reduction, I and as a profit had been made on tho I board's working it would have been appreciated. On the recommendation of Cr Galbraith the matter was left to the lightI ing committee. The musical director of the Cairns Citizens’ Band (Australia) wrote | expressing appreciation of the hospitality I given them on the occasion of their visit to Woodville. A letter from the secretary of the Municipal Band regarding assistance, and which had been deferred from last meeting, was brought up for discussion. I Cr Forbes (tho council’s representative on the band) said that, although the band had been battling along steadily, it had been an uphill job to maintain matters at a satisfactory level. The bandmaster received no remuneration for his services and 1 had gono to considerable trouble. As the I band had not fulfilled its agreement with I the council by playing outside nine times j during tho year, a subsidy could not be I granted, but he moved that, as a measure of assistance, the council forgo the rent for (he current year and remit their gas account for six months. Cr Galbraith seconded the motion which was carried. When inference was made to the vacant section formerly occupied by the Club Hotel, councillors were of the opinion that some definite action should be taken. The property had remained unfenced and the hotel collar unfilled since the fire. According to the by-laws, the section should at least be fenced and it was resolved that unless some steps wore taken within fourteen days, action would be instituted. The gasworks manager (Mr W. McCormack) reported that tho gas manufactured ! was 190.000 cubic feet; the gas used by | I

consumers 162,000 cubic feet; gas used af the works 2000 cubic feet; gas accounted for 175.000 cubic feet: gas unaccounted for 25,000 cubic feet. Earnings were: Gas sales £B4, far sales £4 15s 6d. coke sales £lO Us. fittings 14s; total £IOO 0s 6d. The Mayor stated that the finance committee bad recommended that Mr 8.. L. Ebbctt read the gas meters and that bis salary bo increased as from Juno 1. The committee’s report was adopted on the motion of Crs Galbraith and lily. It was decided on the motion of (Ys Johnston and Sullivan that CV Galbraith should act as deputy-Mayor in Mr Horne’s absence on a trip abroad. WOMEN’S DIVISION. At the monthly mooting of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs J. M. Graham presided over a good attendance. Votes of sympathy in their bereavement were extended to Mesdamos Kappely, W. Curry, and C. Doggett. New members welcomed were Mesdamos MeKinlav and Warnock. An invitation was received to attend the ninth birthday party of the Palmerston North branch of the division and Mcsdamcs J. Halpin and Sinclair were appointed to attend, ill's J. H. Boyd gave an instructive talk on the League' of Nations and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A competition for a parcel of linen was completed, Mrs J. O'Neil being first and Mrs Strang second. The competition for the afternoon brought forth a number of entries, Mrs J. Prvde being placed first and Mrs J. Mitchell second. Votes of thanks were accorded the judges (Mesdantes Williams and D. McGregor) and the steward (Mrs W. Curry). Mrs R. L. James was thanked for acting as secretary for the decorative classes at the recent chrystanthemum show, the net receipts amounting to £4. The serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses (Mcsdamcs Davidson, Seeker, and Halpin) terminated the meeting. BIRTHDAY PARTY. Last evening a pleasant family party was given by Mrs J. Pryde at her home in McLean Street to celebrate the 82nd birthmmmm in ■

day of her mother. Mrs S. McKinlay, of Ross Street. With music and competitions a merry time was spent, after which the guest of the evening was called upon to light the 82 candles and to cut the beautiful cake made by her daughter, Airs G. Garry. During the day, Mrs McKinlay was 11 io recipient of many congratulatoiy messages. PERSONAL. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs 11. P. Horne) will leave on July 8 for a holiday trip to the East. Their tour will include Rabaul, I Jong Kong and Japan, and they anticipate being away for three months. Mr T. W. Dew, who had to undergo an operation in the Danncyirko Ho-nital yesterday, is progressing satisfactorily.
