WAITUNA WEST.
(From Our'Own Correspondent.) WAITUNA, Ji.ie 12. On Wednesday, a well-attended dance was held in the Waituna Hull, the occasion being to nmko a presentation and gift evening in honour to Miss J. Batohelar and Mr L. Mepham, who are to be married soon. Mr N. V. Shannon, on behalf of those present, handed M’ss Batehelar a large number of useful gifts, lie also on behalf of the Waituna West Football Club presented Mr Mepham with a handsome 6nromeler. He also spoke of Mr Meplram’s many sterling qualities and the great help that he had been to the community, and wished him and Alias Batehelar happiness and prosperity. Mr Mepham thanked everybody for the great kindness shorn and for all the splendid gifts lie and Miss Batehelar had received. Mrs Petersen, on behalf of the members of the Waituna West Women’s Institute. during the even’ng made a presentation of a cose of silver teaspoons to Miss Copeland who is leaving the district to be married shortly and wished her happiness and prosperity in her new sphere. Supper v-aa handed rornd and dancing continued till midnight, professional music being supplied. Extras were played by Mrs A. E. Pearce and others. The monthly meeting of the Waituna West Women’s Institute was held in the ]in 11 on Thursday afternoon, Mrs J. 11. Williamson (president) presiding over a fair number of members. After the business had hern discussed a word competition was held and was won by Miss E. Sliarman. Mrs Petersen (the local schoolteacher) gave an interesting talk on firstaid and on sohool accidmts and sicknesses, and all were keenly interested. Two new members proposed and welcomed were Mrs N. Northcott and Mrs Jenkins. At a suitable juncture. Mrs J. 11. Williamson, on behalf of the meniliers, presented the secretary (Aiiss J. Batehelar), who is to tie married shortly and is leaving the distr ct, with a beautiful crystal vase, saying that all present regretted her impending departure and wished her every success in her married life. Miss Batehelar brefly replied. The monthly competitions for the best posy resulted: —Miss Gylee 1, Airs Petersen 2. Miss E. Shannon 3, and for the best laundered serviettes. Mrs Stone 1 and 2, and Mrs T. D. Stokes 3. Dainty afternoon tea was served by Ibe hostesses (Mrs E. G. England and Alisses K. England and IM. Eggers). Mrs 'l'. Tuohy was proposed and seconded to the committee, to lill the pi nee of Miss Batehelar, and also Airs L. Meads to fill the position of secretary. Next month the competition will Ire'for the best coconnut ice :nd lampshades. .. Mr E. 11. I.ange (chief agricultural instructor to the Wanganui Education Board) visited the district in connection with the weighing and judg ng of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club mangold plots: eight out of nine entries were judged. The successful competitors were Davkl Petersen, yield per acre 79 tons: Ceila Williamson, 72 tons; and Rex. Williamson, 71 tons.
