SINGLES STRUGGLE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 13. 3 p.m. LONDON, June 12. The Wightman Cup tennis contest between Britain and the United Stums commenced to-day. In the women s s’.ngies, Miss K. Stammers (Britain), fighting gallantly from 0-3, led 5—4, 6—5 on her service. Miss Helen Jacobs (l luted States) exploiting her fierce forehand powers, retrieved and went ahead 9—B, but Miss Stammers forced her way to 10—9. Miss Jacobs, volleying mag- , nificently, saved the set points and twice aeed Aliss Stammers, levelling the scores at 10-10. Miss Stammers, undaunted, volleyed and served her way to 11—10, when ram suspended play for half an hour, after which Miss Jacobs did not regain touch.
