WIGHTMAN CUP TEAM
AMERICANS RETAIN TROPHY. LONDON, June 13. The Amercia.n women tennis players retained the Wightman Cup by beating the British team by four matches to three at Wimbledon'. Britain’s defeat was due to Miss Stammers's inconsistency. She did not reproduce yesterday’s brilliance, especially against Mrs Fabyan and was also very erratic in the doubles, when she lost her service at 4-4. Miss Jacobs, after two defeats rallied magnificently in the doubles. Results were :
Singles:—Miss K. Stammers (Great Britain) beat Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), 12-10, 6.1; Miss Dorothy Round (Great Britain) beat Mrs AL Fabyan (U.S.A.), 4-3, 6-4; Mrs Fabyan beat Miss Stammers, 6-3, 6-4; Miss Round beat Miss Jacobs, 6-3, 6-3; Miss C. Babcock (U.S.A.) beat Miss M. Hardwick (Britain), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Doubles :—Miss Babcock and Mrs J. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) beat Misses E. M. Ilearman and M. M. Lyle (Great Britain), 6-2, 1-6, 6-3; Miss Jacobs and Mrs Fabyan beat Misses Stammers and James, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. DAVIES CUP MATCHES. BERLIN, June 13. In a Davies semi-final of the European zone, Germany eliminated Ireland by three matches to nil. Cramm and Henkel beat Rogers and McVeagh, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 in the doubles. TUCKEY INJURED. LONDON, a one 13. Wihle practising the Davis Cup player, C. R. D. Tuckey fell, injuring liis right ankle. It may prevent his playing at Wimbledon.
