FIRE BRIGADE BALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, Juno 11. The annual ball of the Woodvillc Fire Brigade added another to the long list cl outstanding successes in this direction attained by tbe members and tbe function bold in flic Drill Halt last, night was a pronounced success. Splendid preparations had been made for the event and those in charge must have felt well rewarded by the large attendance. Visitors were present from a wide area. Everything was in favour of the dancers, the weather being perfect for dancing, the music provided by a profesisonul orchestra being of the best, while the floor and decorations wore fully up to the brigade’s reputation. . 'loo much praise can hardly be given to the ladies’ committee for the manner in which they worked to make the serving of the sit-down supper run so smoothly. A large share oi credit is duo to the efforts of the secretary (Mr T. E. Anslow) and his committee, who bad carried out. a striking decorative scheme. Orange and green streamers with lycopodium were used with strings of coloured lights and fairy lanterns. An effectively decorated orchestral dais was in the centre of the floor and was set, off by pieces of firefighting equipment. The supper-room was artistically decorated with streamers in spider’s web design and was the work of Mrs J. Charles. The duties of M.C. werp carried out by Fireman S. Smith, while supper extras were played by Messrs N. Cryton, Mia Toa, N. Bartlc and 11. Brooker.

The Mayor (Mr 11. P. Horne) complimented the brigade on its successful function, at the same time commending their work and efficiency during the year. He presented five-year service medals to Firemen S. Smith and A. Flowers and a threeyear certificate to Fireman R. Beale.

The Ngawapurua Women’s Institute held a succcsstul social, when there was a good attendance. Gaines of cards and ping-pong were indulged in, Mr J. Singers and Mrs Hanaray winning the euchre, and Air and Mrs Rofe the five hundred. A paper competition was won by Miss Joyce Morgan. Later in the evening, dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mrs and Miss Williams. Supper was • served by the ladies, the president of the institute (Mrs W. Coulter) expressing thanks to all who had helped to make the evening a success. SOCIAL EVENING.

An enjoyable euchre evening in aid of the Croquet Gitib was given uy Mrs \\. Galbraith cn Monday. Hie attendance was good and the financial return was a satisfactory one. Tbe prizes were won by Mrs Hume and Mr D. Kenyon, tfie consolation awards going to Mrs Haipm and .Ur T. .Jamieson. A competition was won by Mrs Hume. Mrs Haipm thanked Mrs Galbraith on behalf of the club. PERSONAL.

Dr Iltiiry Nelson, referred to in a cable message from London uu Wednesday as having an arm amputated following sept.eeuna resulting from a prick in a linger, while performing an operatiui, is a nephew of Air \t . 11. Nelson, of B oodvillo. Miss D. Paterson, Stratford, is a visitor to Woodvillc.
