DEBATING SOCIETY.
WEEKLY MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating -Society was held on Tuesday evening, eighteen members and visitors * being present. Mr. T. C. Watson occupied ihe chair. The first part of the evening was taken up with impromptu speeches, ten members taking part. >Somo of these speeches were very interesting and otliero humorous and entertaining. The main debate of the evening, “That Spending is More Desirable than Saving,’’ was keenly contested and resulted in a win for the affirmative by a margin of 13 marks. A feature of this debate was the excellent speech delivered by. Mr W. M. Huntington, who received congratulations from both the adjudicator and members. He wa.s also awarded the Piccadilly Medal for the best speech of the evening. Mr G. Rowe acted as adjudicator and gave much valuable advice to members on the art of public speaking.
