MANAWATU BRANCH

The first annual meeting of the Manawatu branch of the National Council of Women ivas held in the 1 .W.C.A. clubroom on Monday. Miss McKenny, the president, occupied the chair. Present: Mesdames J. Harris, K. Ross, Niederer, Bidden Jones McCorkindale, Aynsley, Short, U. Simpson, Misses Simpson, McKenny and Hindie. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. Patterson, W. Howell, Colquhoun, Hibl>erd, McDowell, Howie, Stevens and Miss Grant. Miss McKenny was welcomed back after several months’ absence owing to her sister’s illness. Correspondence was received from Miss McKenny donating her conference expenses to the local branch. This was accepted and a vote of appreciation was passed to Miss McKenny. From Mrs Clausen, tendering her resignation as the W.C.T.U. delegate. This was received with regret. Mrs McConnor was elected as the W.C.T.U. delegate. From Mrs Stanley, Dr. A. M. Begg and Sir Louis Barnett regarding cancer research nnd the necessary funds for this work. It was decided that a letter be sent to national headquarters asking that they give the matter consideration.

Miss McKenny. the president, presented the annual report, giving a resume of the year’s work, which included education of women in matters of general, local nnd international welfare, such as the study of child labour on dairy farms, fatigue, the Child Welfare Act. and sanitation and hygiene in prisons and in all places where women are employed. It was reported that there are eight affiliated societies in the Manawatu branch of the National Council of Women. Miss McKenny represents the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, Miss llindle the Y.W.C.A., Mrs BridenJomis the Mothers’ Union, Mrs Boniface the Cuba Street Ladies’ Guild, Mesdames Patterson, MeCorkindale, Short, and Miss Grant the Federation of Women’s Institutes, Miss Simpson, Mesdames Howell, Harris, Niederer, Hibberd, McDowell, Howie, Colquhoun the W.D.F.U., and Mrs Clausen the W.C.T.U. There are three associate members, Mesdames K. Ross, D. Simpson and McDowell. Bliss McKenny urged that during the coining year every endeavour he made to secure the affiliation of further societies in this district.

Thanks were expressed to the Press for publications of reports, to the Y.W.C.A. for the use of their rooms, to the honorary auditor (Mr Bull), to the secretary, treasurer, and all members for their loyal co-operation. Bliss BfcKenny’s report was received with acclamation.

The balance-sheet was adopted. The national levy of ‘JO per cent, was passed for payment. The president, secretary and treasurer were elected as the council’s Savings Bank signatories. The election of officers resulted : President, Bliss was again elected to this position; Biiss P. Hindle was elected secretary and Bliss Chant treasurer; vice-presidents, Blrs D.'Simpson and Mrs BleC’orkindnle. It was decided that a study on the domestic work should be made for next month’s programme.
