EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” MAY IS, 1906. Dannevirks, the census figures showed, had a population of 3510, an increase of 1195 since the previous census. A huge tank engine "had been built to haul trains on the Rinnitaka inclines and it was suggested that its construction, involving an outlay of £7OOO, was a failure. The engine was “E 66.” _ ' A sensational subsidence in a .bill at'Newcastle (Australia) had wrecked many homes. The whole area had moved about two inches due, it wa.s believed, to the falling in of disused mines. An authoritative actuary bad made the statement, according to an American cablegram, that none of the insurance companies in that country knew if they were solvent until the Sail Francisco fire and earthquake claims had been paid. It was noticeable that Hon. R. J. Seddon, Premier of New Zealand, referred to the Colony as “God’s own country” in his speeches in Australia.
