Pawson gained ground with a brilliant cut'through, but College had the Feilding side in serious danger from powerful forward rushes, and finally .Sherratt received on the blind •side near the corner to dash over. C-ampell missed with the kick, and College led 6—3 at the interval. College again forced the pace on resuming, and Feilding Old Boys were kept defending hard. Ball retired from the College backs with ah injured head, and was replaced by Earley. Waugh made a good run and centred, Hatching the opposition out of position. Campbell, in attempting to save, was penalised for holding on, and 'Jack Finlay put over an easy lack from in front of the posts to equalise the scores. Play became exciting as a great forward battle progressed, the College players resolutely stopping every opposition back movement in its infancy. Harper retired with a facial injury, and 1 Gil ray took the field for College Blyth failed with a penalty lack, ami a splendid game ended with the score : Feilding Old Boys 6, Masaey College 6. .Mr G. PALMERSTON NORTH OLD BOYS i • WIN. Spectators at the Palmerston North: Old Boys v. Fcilding A match at Johnston Park on Saturday witnessed ; a good clean game. The visitors showed their superiority not in weight but in the efficient manner with which the ball was tossed about. Passing by the visitors was pretty to watch, hut despite Old Boys’ better combination | Fcilding A played well. The teams j were:— j Palmerston North Old Boys.—Bet- j teridge, Thompson, Mofiatt, Bradley, | Olliver, Irvine, Chrystall, Lovelock, Louisson, Cutler, O'Doa, Kiugsbeer, i Lewin, Powell, Thomas. . j Fcilding A.—Brown, G. Thompson secured: and made a big for the line, scoring: in a handy position. Betteridge, made no mistake with the kick. Vigorous play followed, with the yellows making a determined bid to get the better of the perfect combination ot the visiting backs. Moving quickly, the vellows battled their way to Old Boys’ goal-line, where, from a scrum, the leather came out to Nicol who narrowly lost a try.. Bradley got away up the side-line in a movement which found the yellows out of place. He looked like beating Brown when \V. McCorkindale came swiftly across the field to tackle the fleeting winger, which ended a dangerous attack. Feilding gathered quickly and, repulsing the invaders, snared in the sparkling play that followed with Nicol fujy extended in the attack which rapidly advanced to Old Boys’ goal. Betteridge, However, was unshaken in meeting the advance, and, taking the leather sent it cleanly to the side-hne. In the line-out the visitors handled the leather in a masterly style and with perfect combination the yellows veie obliged to fall away under the pressure which produced an_ unsettling effect on Eeilding. Handling in finished style Old Boys advanced deep into 'heir opponents’ territory where the defenders infringed lor Betteridge to miss the penalty points. At this stage Hight was obliged to retire and Kitchen tilled the vacancy. the score ut half time was unchanged. On resumption Eeilding rallied, but from Thompson the ball passed lo Moffatt, who from midfield worked ms way through to pass to Olliver who was in support. 'From a quick Imeout Bradley secured possession and in a burst of determined effort lie scored. Betteridge again added tiie points. Bradley again took a pass from Moffatt and hoadilv sprinted to score in the corner. Betteridge, who was in excellent kicking lorm, converted. A free kick given to the yellows for offside play was the means ot opening the local team’s score and W . McCorkindale promptly despatched the ball over the bar. Just before the final bell rang Feilding essayed another attack, G. McCorkindale cuttin.' in, only to be well tackled by Thompson and thrown out on the ~o yard line.

NOTES ON THE GAMES. RUGGED COLLEGE PACK. ■ Tho pack which took the field for Massey College against Feilding Old Boys was a very rugged and virile 9110. The players excelled in hard rucking, and severely restricted the movements of the opposition backs by their sweeping, rushes and resolute following-up. The College forwards played a great game, and determinedly maintained the pace to the finish. College had by far the greater territorial advantage, and were unlucky not to cross more than once from thenrepealed invasions. At times they liteiallv flung themselves at the line but the Feilding Old Boys defence held. It was gruelling work 111 both the tight and the loose, and once the L/Ollege forwards got on the move in l a bunch they were hard to check. \Yltll a more powerful back line, the match would have been >von by College. Blyth did great work behind the scl-u 111, being very dangerous near the line, but was closely watched. Campbell gave a dashing display as fullback, weathering some severe attacks and clearing repeatedly before fast to,lowing up. His display showed allround excellence. , Sutton, Hart, Irving and Barkei were the pick of the College forwards. The last-named, who played last year, is now available again. Irving is >a former Bay of Islands representative. N. Ball, the All Black wing-three-quarter was absent from the Feilding Old Bovs buck lino. He cracked a rib in the first match of the season against United, and received another knock

the following week. He should he ava.ilahle, again next Saturday. Edwards was playing full-back m place of Gloyn, who is suffering from a sprained ankle. Pawson brought off some pretty manoeuvres as first five-eightfi, despite the fact that the College forwards were on top of him almost continuously. The Finlay Brothers played solidly in the Feilding Old Boys forwards, a newcomer among whom was Marshall, a former Bangit.kei representative. ST. PATRICK’S AND KIA TOA.

With both sets of forwards fairly ' evenly matched, and all the backs i displaying initiative and deternnn EH tion, tho contest between St. Patncks and Kia Toa provided many highlights. A feature of the match was the absenco of a score in the second halt, though on many occasions one appear- . ed certain. The St. Patrick s backs were quick in penetration,, but the Kia Toa rearguard wero the more - dangerous when the ball reached the three-quarter line. In the Kia Toa side AYasloy and , Barnao combined in several swift _ thrusts which were backed up by weight. On tho other hand, Brinsden, at first five-eighths, and R. Gillespie and M. Gillespie, tho next men in the ; line, several times swung through the ; Kin Toa defence. Brinsden was unlucky when he tried for a field goal in the second halt und tailed. He liad only a moment in which to act and the addition of the extra points would j have meant much. Dawick also was pushed out once when he was nearly within diving distance of the line. Kia floa, However, were on the at- ■ tack in the latter portion of the game. 'Jho defence held, however, though it had a close escape oil several occasions. One rush saw bimpson, Thorburn, McKenzie, K. Beard YVasley, and Barnao all handle the ball and the onslaught was stopped just in tunc. There wore then hut a lew go to the end of the game. White, Sears, Britistten, Sherman, and M. and R. Gillespie were the most impressive lor St. Patrick s, and k. 1 Beard, L. Beard, Crawford and McKenzie took the eye in the Kia Toa hiitiinonds, a member ol the St. Patrick's team, was unable to take the field on the side ot the scrum owing to trouble with one ot his legs, .tie is now recovering. . , Sherman, who was playing in tne pack, had already played one game in the afternoon—in a junior maten j on the same ground immediately prior to the commencement of the semoi I fixture. He put up an excellent showing and if he maintains that standard , there is a strong possibility of tho ; juniors losing him. FEILDING B AND UNITED. Although the final score of 16—5 ! favoured Feilding B in their match ; with United, the game was more or I less even until near the end, when the I visitors took charge and wore rarely pushed back into tftcir own halt. Dor the greater portion of the game it 1 i was a hard lorward struggle, tnougii I more of a loose nature than solid ', scrummaging. The Feilding players ' I had a stronger defence than United, ' I and it was that factor which gave 1 ! them their load on points. . , I The first try, scored by tho visitors, 1 was a presentation of three points, ’! for the home side’s full-back slipped ’ when a Feilding man was right up to ’ him, and tho former had only to force f 1 tlio ball down to take the try. All the Jjsamc ,it showed the value ol following 3 j UP |‘ n the first half the United forwards J several times had tho f eilding playeis bustled, and sharp work in the loose j kept the game going at a good pace. United tried a change at half-time ! and iMudlay went up from centre-three quarter to the front rank of the ior- ’ wards, while Luxinoore took his place j in the rearguard. , Of the bedding side, McAsey, bitz- , gerald, A. Dernier, Sutherland and ivitchen appeared to be the pick. j AT JOHNSTON PARK. ’ It the match at Johnston Park, = Feilding, Ohiver and Betteridge were . most useful in the Palmerston North Old Boys team. Bradley played perfectly. . ~ Cutler and Kingsbeer were in form and did their full share of the work. ' Of the Feilding A team, Y\ ald in , ljlaved particularly well, us did YY. and P G. McCorkindale. The game was open until Feilding found that they were j being beaten, when they changed thentactics and by playing close up endea- } voured to smash the pretty hand ling , of the leather which the visitors made I so entertaining. L The Old Boys team were obviously „ very lit and gave a polished exhibition.

JUNIOR CURTAIN-RAISER. OLD BOYS GO WELL. Handling well, and showing good penetration with their back movements, Old Boys beat St. Patrick’s by 17 points to 3 in the junior curtainraiser on the oval. St. Patrick’s pressed early, but ,01d Boys repulsed them and from a back movement the ball went out to Bradley, who slid over as he was tackled. Stuckey failed to add the major points. St. Patrick’s invaded the opposition territory and were unlucky not to cross, lii a clearing movement Gardner received on the Old Boys wing to streak for the line and score a runaway try. which Stuckey converted will! a magnificent kick from the side-line Bradley followed up several pretty cut-ins by despatching Broad for a try in tho corner. Stuckey s kick just failed. St.- Patrick’s retaliated, -and from a nice passing rush C. Helmwent over for a good try in the corner Delaney failed narrowly to convert. Bradley figured in a pretty movement after the interval when, alter passing to Broad, he came round on the outside to receive again and crosskick to McPherson, who went over tor lin ea.sv try. Lang’s kick missed. Larson next cut clean through the opposition to score. Lang’s k.ck was again unsuccessful, and the game-ended with the score: Old Boys 17. St. Patricks Mr H. Y.M.C.A. TEAMS. PALMERSTON~NORTH BEAT. WELLINGTON. As part of their sports competition programme, the visiting boys’ team | from tho Wellington branch of the Y.M.C.A. engaged the local Y.M.C.A. players in a Rugby match on Saturday. The home team had much the better of the game, being more proficient in the art of passing, and won by 18 points to 3. From a forward rush E. Jackson went down the wing in a nice run, passing inside to E, Seward, who went over to score for Palmerston North, The kick failed. Rallying down the centre, AY’ollingtou carried the play well inside the home twenty-five, where ,for an infringement by Palmerston North, they were granted a free kick, Sweeney putting the ball over the bar. Play then ranged up and down .the field, with the home side holding a slight advantage until R. Carter, a Palmerston North forward, seized his opportunity and went over for a try. The kick again failed. Half-time was sounded soon after. During the second spell. Wellington made a determined effort to even tho scores, but the home defence was too strong and several promising moves were nipped in the hud by vigorous tackling. Then in a counter-attack Palmerston North piled on the points rapidly. Smith was the first over the line, and no sooner was the ball in play again than A. Leader beat the opposing backs in a fast run. Then E. Rush scored twice in succession for Palmerston North and there was no doubt as to the ultimate result.
