Mrs Albrcchtccn (president) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the local branch of the Blanket- Society. The nurse's report, showing an increase in activities, was adopted. Accounts amounting to £3 10s 2d were passed for payment. The president reported thjfc it was expected a large number would bo attending the annual mooting to bo held at Pahiatua in June. Donations amounting to £2 12s 6d were received by the secretary (Mrs A. S. Carter). Mr A. Kennedy, headmaster of the Ekctahuna District High School, Mr W. G. Henderson and Mrs Johnston, both of Iho school staff, attended the annual meeting of the Now Zealand Educational Institute at Wellington. Mr and Mrs V. The senior Rugby match played at the Domain this afternoon between Eketahuna Old Boys and Bnllancc resulted in a win the former by 14 points to 6. Points for Old Boys came from tries scored by K. The game was full of interest with hard working forw'ards on both sides. J. Waters, Old Boys, was the best forward on the field, with' IV. Aitken also prominent. M. Jenson was the outstanding player for the visiting team. A. Hansen and S. Pye, Old Boys, did splendid work and wore the pick of the backs. Mr W. Udy controlled the game. Mar 18. At the week-end an A grade team journeyed to the Riverside golf links, where it was defeated by 4 games. Riverside 13 visited Eketahuna and were defeated by Eketahuna 13, 11—10. Tbo following is the report submitted by the secretary-manager at the annual meeting of the Tararua I’ower Board, bold on Friday:—The period has been marked by activity' in most phases of the undertaking and has clceed with prospective and authorised construction work to serve consumers on the route of 52 additional miles of the inner area. The returns disclose the important fact that consumers in the reticulated districts are increasing their demands for electricity and realising more its convenience and utility. Apart troin the extensions to the main lines recently authorised, there is a movement from at least three other directions for electric supply which sooner or iatcr will assume practical aspects. The following additional loans have been raised during the year at an interest rate of 3j per cent. Hydro-electric loan, 1935, £2000; hydro-electric loan, 1936, £12,000; premiums loan, £6400; Pahiatua Borough Council redemption loan, £7700; total, £28,100. These loans involve an annual redemption charge of £I4OO for 20 years. The loan liability is £169.000. The consolidated sinking fund is £15,570 19s lOd and the depreciation investment fund £10,790 2s 6d. The total investments therefore are £26,361 2s 4d. Included in this are two payments from the year’s revenue —sinking fund (£1860) and depreciation fund (£1700). Three debentures of the new issue have been redeemed from funds in the hands of the Public Trustee amounting to £2290. The original loans, with one exception, have been converted. Many of these carried an interest rate of 6 per cent. The now securities issued to their place bear interest at 4j per cent. In this, the thirteenth year, we are able to show a net profit of £1370 6s 6d on electricity and trading accounts,, which is the most pleasing result we have so far achieved in any year, and this the talc-iale figure on the assumption of prosperity of the business. It may well bo considered a small profit on a turnover of nearly £29,000 as compared with the returns of other supply authorities, but it can scarcely bo disputed that the district has not fully responded to tho various overtures of the board in point of rates and conditions of supply over a period of promotion activity of eleven years’ duration. The following comparison is interesting:—Purchases of electricity, 1935, £6246; 1936. £6578; sales of electricity, £24,892 and £26 086; trading turnover,, £1907 and £2665; net profit, £6ll and £1370. Maintenance and renewals have been exceptionally heavy during the period under review. The total working costs, less electricity purchased, arc now compared for two years:, Maintenance, 1935. £2132; 1936. £2573; renewals, £661 and £865; management and general, £2069 and £2250. The general revival of trade lias undoubtedly contributed to the enhanced net result of tho year’s working. Tho road construction contracts, of which there have been several, have added ievenue by several ' hundred pounds. llus source of revenue is, of course, incidental. The dairying industry load has been well maintained, but expansion on this side of the business is scarcely to bo expected, ihc industrial load shows minor signs of growth. Tbo residential load, while showing some increase is disappointing, as it is the major phase of the business. Electric ranges, until the lust two months, have not appealed to the public. This should be a source of revenue not yet enjoyed to the expected extent. The connected load is now 6,352.630 k.w., having increased by 541.616 k.w. dining the year. The inner area of 700 square miles is now reticulated with' 223 miles of lino, and serves 1635 consumers. The total number of units taken at Mamramaire was 3.780.C09, an increase of 243,600 units on the figures, for the previous year. Units sold amounted to 3,256,368. Mr J. D. Wilson was unanimously re-elected chairman. Tn returning thanks for the honour again bestowed on him. and the expression of confidence, he slated that in his opinion tho board had passed the burning point afterstruggling along through several anxious years. He trusted the time was not far distant when they could sell electricity to flic consumer at' a cheaper rate. Praise must be given the executive officers for the interest displayed in the board’s activities, and a compliment paid to the secre-tarv-manager (Air W. I*. Taylor) for the capable and earnest, manner in which lie attended to his duties. The latter briefly thanked tho chairman and on behalf of the staff returned thanks to the board for the restoration of cuts in salary. The finance committee appointed for the ensuing year comprises Messrs J. D. Wnson (chairman), W Britland, J. B. Carrutliers, and R. Judd. The restoration of cuts involves the s U m of £ll7 per annum, including £25 each to the secretary-manager and Inspector •Green. The bi-monthly meeting of the board rvas 'held on Friday also. Mr Wilson presiding. Also in attendance were Messrs J. R. Camithers, W. Simpson, R. Judd, O. T. Richardson. J. Eouhy. T . Davies A W. Bissett. and W r . Britland. Accounts totallino- £2548 3s 7d were passed for payment. The secretary-manager reported on proposals to instal water heartens at concession prices and that a fixed charge of 8s 8d per month be made for power, foi 20 hours service in 24 hours, payment for the consumer’s' share of reticulation to be made on the instalment system. In connection with electric ranges, he proposed _ that they be sold at actual ccst, the unit rate to bo Id, also that a plug-in type of range be lot out on hire rental with right of purchase. Both proposals were- discussed and arc to be given a trial extending over u period of twelve months. The engineer

(Mr Fraser) reported that a start had been made with the Pori reticulation, and as soon as sufficient poles are available a commencement will be made from the Alfredton end. Tn reply to Mr Richardson, be stated the loss in the power factor-some 46 000 units—was due to flic present transformer system which lie had hopes of improving in the immediate future.
