MARTON, May 14. At the monthly meeting of the Marton Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr F. Prunell) presided. The Main Highways Board advised that it had decided to take over the maintenance of roadways at level crossings on main highways and that it expected the local authority to maintain them as part of the highway with the usual maintenance of £3 for £l.—Referred to the overseer. In a letter, Mr R. T. C. Scott asked the council to undertake the installation of a large culvert on Tutaenui Road, stating that the present culvert was too small to deal with the rain water and was the cause of flooding on his property. —Referred to the overseer to report. The statement of receipts supplied by the treasurer from April 17 to May 9 showed revenue totalling £471 6s od.

Within a short time, the street lighting in Marton will be controlled by an “electric eye,” by means of which the lights will be automatically switched on in the evening and off in the morning as soon as the natural light reaches a certain density. The device is in operation in various parts of the Dominion.

At the annual meeting of the Mai*ton Boxing Association, Mr E. C. Haddock presided. The annual report disclosed that the financial position was not a healthy one and that a loss of appi'oximately £l2 had been made on the year’s working. The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) moved that in view of the lack of support the association was receiving, it go into recess for the season. The motion was carried.
