RISE IN PRICES.
OBSERVATION BY PREMIER. (By Telegra.pli.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, May 14. Admitting that there was a tendency for prices to rise as a result of the Government’s legislation, the Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage) stated to-day with emphasis the Government’s determination to use its powers under the Board of Trade Act to see to it that workers who receive increases in wages and salaries will he safeguarded against an increase in tiro cost of living.
”lt is no use securing higher wages if the worker lias to pay more for goods he needs,” lie said. The Government’s ideal of increased buying power could not l>e achieved under such conditions. He could not agree with the suggestion that the legislation should increase production costs, but the Government were alive to the situation.
