(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, April 22. Although the official opening of the Shannon Golf Club is not scheduled until about three weeks’ time, -?thc new links, which are situated within the borough, were open for play last 'Saturday, when sonic 40 club members joined in an enjoyable afternoon. The layout of (he new course was tho subject . of congratulatory remarks and the officials responsible deserve great praise for excellent results achieved in such a short time. Arrangements are in hand for the official opening at an early date, when surrounding sister clubs will be invited to attend.

Tfio last meeting of the present School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Correspondence was received from the Education Board, with reference to post-primary education and tho visit to Shannon of the Minister of Education. The bafanco-sheet. was returned from the board, duly certified as correct, and the secretary (Mr j. Campbell) was accorded a vote of thanks for hrs services and complimented by the committee, on the manner in which the books had been kept, for the past two years.- The head teacher reported that the roll number was 323; the averago • attendance had been by mild complaints. The- Bible instruction., which had been inaugurated in the school, was running smoothly. A list of repairs was tabled and instructions given regarding carrying out the work. The chairman, in thanking the headmaster for his report, congratulated him and Iris staff and pupils on once again winning tho ITobson Shield, and expressed the thanks of the committee for the co-operation and assistance received from the headmaster and staff during the past two years. Mr Best (chairman)- also thanked the committee for the support accorded him during the term. Mr Campbell. in returning thanks, eulogised the excellent work done by Mr Best in tiic interests of the school.

At the Borough Council meeting held on Tuesday evening an invitation from the local R.S.A, to attend a memorial service on Anzae Day was accepted. The Horowhenua Hockey Association were granted the use of the Domain for hockey on Wednesday afternoons, when necessary. A request from the Palmerston North Free Ambulance for financial assistance was received. A tender for t lie supply and spreading of 250 yards of metal at 6s 3d per cubic yard was accepted. The contract for cleaning 115 chains of drains bad been completed and tho work was reported upon as satisfactory. The borough section in Graham Street was let at £5 ,prr year. The Horowhentta County Council wrote stating that the complaint of wandering stock entering the borough from county roads had been referred to the county ranger for investigation. It was resolved to take action against all persons entering the Domain other than through the gates or over the stiles provided. At the close of the meeting, the Mayor (Mr E. Butt) was congratulated upon tho 55th anniversary of his wedding which he and Mrs Butt had celebrated the previous day. The good wishes of all were extended to the Mayor and Mayoress. His Worship feelingly responded. The borough foreman, Mr F. Haley, who met with an eye injury during 'bis work, although home from hospital, is

| not yet able to resume his duties. Mr H. M. Mead is at present indisposed. Tho Mangaore Social; Club (Public Works Department! will bo opening, their new hall early next month. Tlie building, which is very comfortably fitted with ail that is necessary for the pleasure of the staff, will fill a Tong-felt want. Despite the inclement weather, tlie Bowling. Club held their closing day on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a good attendance and all spent a happy time. The ladies of the croquet section journeyed to Foxton to attend tho official closing' of the Foxton Croquet Club, and received the much coveted Shbnvood Cup which Shannon bad■ won for this season.
