BASKETBALL.

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Basketball Association -was held last evening, Miss L. A. Brown presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Misses J. Rennie, J. M. Barrie and P. Hastings. The annual report and balance-sheet (previously .published) were read and adopted. , The balance-sheet showed that on the year's working a gain of £ls 3s had been made, and this, stated the chairman, was the most favourable balance that the association had yet had.

It was decided to write thanking the treasurer (Miss J. M. Barrie) for the excellent work that she had done for the association. It was due chiefly to her work that such a favourable balance was shown, said Miss Brown. The chairman referred to the excellent work that Miss F. Ross had done in her capacity as secretary to the association, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Ross.

Miss C. W. Vautier gave a report on the New Zealand tournament, which she had attended* as manager of the Manawatu team, and she favourably commented on the improved standard of basketball in this district. This was manifest at the tournament where the local team had won five games out of the seven played—a gratifying result. A feature of the matches was the physical fitness of the girls, said the speaker. At all times they had put their best into the games.—Miss Vautier was accorded a vote of thanks for her report. The chairman recommended that the Referees’ Association be revived as the referees at present were meeting unoffi-cia-lly. A motion to this effect was ca.rried.

It was decided that mid-week competition games be commenced on the first Wednesday in May. Miss Vautier suggested that' a preliminary tournament bs held among Saturday teams available on May 9 a.nd the first of these competition games on May 16. This course was decided upon. A vote of thanks was accorded the caretaker of the Technical School basketball grefund (Mr G. Pritchard) for his courtesy and interest in the affairs of the association. Donations to the total value of approximately £3 3s were made to the YW.C.A., Technical High School, Girls’ High School, St. John Ambulance and Palmerston North Free Ain-, bulance. Officers for the forthcoming season were elected as follow: President. Miss Brown; vice-presidents, Miss Vautier and Mrs Wilson; secretary. Miss Ross; treasurer, Miss Barrie; lion, auditor, Mr N. I. Nielsen. The secretary was authorised to write thanking Mr Nielsen for his services as auditor.
