WEDNESDAY ItEPRESENT ATIVES. MATCH WITH DANNEVIRKE. In tlie Wednesday cricketers’ representative match, Manawatu v. Dannevirke, played at the Sportsground on Saturday, the visitors proved the winners by the narrow margin of two runs, the winning stroke being a four by Smith off tho last ball of the final oyer. Dannevirke won the toss and sent Manawatu to the wickets, the home team opening with Wheatley and Elliot. The former batsman opened confidently, scoring effectively with his leg shots. Elliott was dismissed for G by Hill, who accepted* a hard catch. In his next over Chapman tempted Ross to hit, but the batsman mistimed his stroke to send the ball high and the trundler accepted the catch. He was on the way to obtaining the “hat trick” when ho. dismissed Millar with his next ball, but Quigg, the following batsman, foiled the attempt. With the exception of Wheatley, the performances of the batsmen were unaccountably weak. Wheatley’s stand was responsible for 56 runs and his score included nine fours. Mana.watu’s innings closed at 83. In the howling, the best average went to Chapman, who took 6 wickets for 37. Dannevirke then went to the wickets and, bettering Manawatu’s performance by a considerable margin, made 118 for their first strike, Millar securing top score of 28. The bowling of the Manawatu players was only of average quality, Millar (3 for 10) securing the best figures. Charles, who had been batting confidently, hurt a muscle and had to retire when 20. In their second strike Manawatu were unable to improve greatly on their first innings performance and were dismissed for 93. Wheatley (47 not out) was again instrumental in adding materially to the score. When the visitors again went to the wickets they required 59 to win. Towards the*call of time the issue was in doubt and not jmtil the final stroke was the game decided. Details are as follow: DANNEVIRKE.
