RACING NEWS

RICCARTON CANDIDATES. NOTES ON THE FORM, (By “Spectator.’’) J. \V. Jennings will ride Variant in the Groat Easter and Queen of Song in the Great Autumn at Kiccarlon. Other mounts in the Easter Handicap are: —Sea Fox (A. G. Parsons), Gaysome (R. Marsh). The latter mare is reported to be unsound, and if she docs not start Marsh may be on Knocklin. Other Groat Eastor riders are: W. Gotton, Fair Weather; H. W. Hibbercl, Cranford. Cotton will also be on Riptide in the Great Autumn. Gustos has recovered from the soreness that affected him after his return south from Awapuni, and ho should be in good fettle to tackle Wild Chase in the Ghampagno Stakes on Monday. The second leg of the Riccarton double, the Greut Autumn, will be run oil Tuesday. At the present time those fancied most uro Kinnoull, Argentic, Queen of Song. Knockfm has becomo unruly at the barrier and this is likely to affect the support normally to be accorded her in the Great Easter. If she goes away with the others she will cut out a merry seven furlongs. Fracas always races well at Riccarton and the long straight will not worry her os much as somo of the others. She failed at Trcntham, but there may be a different tale to toll on Monday. Loehlaggan, who will probably bo favourito for the Great Easter, has won four out of her last five starts. She put up a track record when she won the Flying Handicap at Dunedin in 1.25 2-5, and the next horse was four lengths away. Next timo out she scored at Oamaru. Altogether her form is impressive and she is entitled to her position as favourite. Concertpitch is a likely sort among the lightweights in the Great Easter. He has some fine performances to his credit in the hack class, but so far he has not “cracked it’’ in open company. Cottingham has been galloping freely on the tracks, and should be in the limelight down south soon. Great Easter opposition, though, looks beyond him at present. Hounslow, a Grand National Hurdles winner, has not been raced for some time and may not be ready for the Easter meeting at Riccarton. Streamline won the hurdles at Timaru and his form looks the best of those engaged in the Brush Hurdles. Arctic Star won a similar race at the Riccarton February meeting and he should provide the most opposition.

A report from Christchurch states that Jolly Beggar, the last Grand National Hurdles winnex', has been galloping woil and now looks better than ever. He ri engaged in the Autumn Plate. Riptide won the recent Timaru Cup in good stylo and the Shambles gelding will carry strong support in the Autumn Plato.

Epic is one of tho most consistent of the Riccarton two-year-olds and should show up if reserved for the Russley Plate. Wild Chase and Custos, not to mention Paper Slipper, should bo too good for him in the Champagno Stakes.

Swordstick, who claims an engagement in the Courtenay Handicap, is reported to be in nice order alter his recent racing. Brevity has raced consistently in the south and should again show up in his Riccarton engagements. Osculate likes the Riccarton course, and as ho ran fourth in tho Dunedin Cup he looks a likely one to see out a solid nine furlongs in the Sockburn Handicap.

Emmeline Girl made a favourable impression when she won at Motukarara and will not be neglected in the Russley Plate. Great Star has taken a new lease of life and is a lightweight in the Great Easter that may create a surprise. Moonbeam should do well at Riccarton. Her Waimate Cup race has done her no harm and she is undoubtedly improving all the time. GENERAL. That smart hack Pakanui, wiio lias won eight races on end, is to race at Auckland on the second day. The Hunting Sorxg colt did not show striking form last season as a two-year-old, for in nine races he recorded two wins, a second and a third. His best perfoi-mance was when he won the Feilding Juvenile Stakes, those in the places behind him being Severe and Alchemic.

The imported horse March Along died recently at Mr H. Docker’s property, Aberdeen Stud, Wangaratta (N.S.W.). Imported from England in 1922 by the late Mr J. Brown, March Along sired a number of useful gallopers, among them being Adeline’s March, Lightning March, Adrian’s March, and Elizabeth March. He had been at Wangaratta for about three years. March Along was bred in 1917. Ho was by Swynford from the Marco mare Marchetta.
