BOWLING

EASTER TOURNAMENT. AN AUSPICIOUS OPENING. No better weather could have been desired for the opening of the Manawatu Bowling Centre's Easter rinks tournament, which commenced yesterday on three of the city greens. With a fine morning, the sun continued to shine to provide a glorious day. With 46 entries, as against 44 last year, the play was divided into four sections, one being accommodated on the Palmerston North green, another on the Takaro green and two at the Northern Club.” Three games are being played each day for three davs, so that the section play will be brought to a close on Monday afternoon.

Prior to the opening of activities a.t the Palmerston North green, Mr R. Ramsay (president of the club) ex-' bended a hearty welcome on behalf of the club members' to those taking part, and also expressed gratification that the weather for the opening day was good. The president of the Alanawatu Bowling Centre, Mr J. A. Na.sh, welcomed the visiting bowlers and expressed the pleasure of the members of the centre executive at the large attendance of players from other centres. He jocularly 'remarked that there was always good weather in Palmerston North for the tournament. The committee in charge, he said, hnfl done their best in eo far as greens were concerned, and although the Palmerston North green had the appearance of being bare, the players would find that it would, Idee the other greens, prove satisfactory. The venue for the final of the tournament would be decided at a meeting of the centre on Monday night, when the tournament had been advanced to the completion of section play. Air Nash said that visiting bowlers would be taken for a motor drive on Sunday afternoon it they so wished, and those who desired to be so entertained were asked to hand their names in to the secretary! Mr Nash explained that each game was to be of 18 heads. He expressed his pleasure at the entry of three rinks from the Thorndon Club, a rink from that club having carried off the honours at last year’s tournament. He had no doubt they had every intention of doing the same this year and he wished them the best of luck. Air Na-sli then called on the Alanawatu bowlers to give three cheers for the visitors a.nd play was entered upon. t At the Northern green speeches ot welcome were made by Messrs F. C. Bryan and P.’S. Larcomb, and at the Takaro green Messrs G. H. Farrar and .J. J. O’Shea officiated. The secretarial duties in connection with the tournament are in the hands of Air A. F. AVimsett. Crump was beaten by Kirk (Northern) by 18 points to 15 in his first game and in the second his opponent, Dixon (Terrace End), won bv 23 points to 9. Crump’s third game was against Gilberd (Alanawatu) and on the 18th head the score was even at 11 —allCrump personally provided the winning shot, it being the first of his own deliveries. He drew the shot with a toucher in the extra head to take the game by one point. Perry, who is skipping the same rink as that which won the tournament last year, enjoyed wins in his three initial games. His final with Crump in 1935 was one to be remembered, and Perry’s progress in the present tournament will be watched with interest.

A rink from the National Services Club (Hastings) are newcomers to the tournament. This club is but two years old and, in a membership of 40, 35 of the bowlers are first-year players. The club is a social one, with a total membership of 160. so that a quarter of the members enjoy the relaxation and interest to be had on their bowling green, which adjoins the chib. An Auckland rink figures in the tourney this year, skipped by AA • Smith, who is at present staying m the AVoodville district and persuaded three of his club-mates to come down. One member of the rink is L. J. Keys, a well-known bowler who has played on several occasions with Professor Maxwell Walker. Last year there were seven rinks which • went through the first day’s three games without loss and the same has occurred this year. At the close of play yesterday the unbeaten rinks were those ski plied by J. A. Nash (Palmerston North) in section A; Skoglund (Northern) and Alorgan (Shannon) in section B ; Bary (Palmerston North), Perry (Thorndon) and Hicks (Oroua) in section C and Roid (Lyall Bay) in section D. Last year the skips with three wins in the first day’s play were Bary (Palmerston North) and C. J. B. Norwood (Victoria) in section A ; Hodd (Pahiatua) in- section B; Crump (Palmerston North) and L. Arnott (Palmerston North) in section O; P. 0. Skoglund (Palmerston North) and L. T. Brown (Palmerston North in section D. All those taking part in the tournament will wish Mr Norwood a quick recovery from the injuries he received in a motor accident in the South Island recently.
