CENSUS RETURNS.

GAINS AND LOSSES. WELLINGTON, April 8. A total of 85 preliminary census returns have been issued by the Government Statistician; this number including received on Monday and yesterday. Ihe most notable return is from Nelson city, the population of which has increased by a little more than 1000. Ashburton borough is shown to have grown by 606 persons and Waipukurau by 285. Notable gains have also been made by Levels County, I’icton, Woodville, Tahunanui in Nelson, Pukekohe and Kawakawa. Among the centres that havo lost population are Wyndham in Southland, Jjketahuna, Arrowtown, the historic goldmining centre near Queenstown, Geraldine, tne rural centre north of Timaru, Nightcaps, the coal-mining centre in Southland s western district, and Akaroa
