FEILDING

| BOARD OF MANAGERS. i MONTHLY MEETING. Tlie monthly meeting of the Board of ! Managers of the Feiiding Agricultural I High School was held ,last night, Mr Jas. ; Knight presiding. Also 5 present were ' Mrs J. E. Barltrop, Messrs W. A. Salt, : W. Challis, W. W. Andrews, A.' Campbell, H. Mclntyre, T. S. Goldsmith, A. ! C. Buist and the headmaster (Mr L. J. i Wild). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. B. Seddon and E. H. Brewer. | lif reply to the board's letter to Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, asking ; for additional accommodation at the boys" ■ hostel, the Minister stated that the matter ’ was under consideration and that iliq ■ board would be notified later of a date on ! which it could wait on the Minister to ! further the subject. CONVEYANCE OF PUPILS. Particulars were sought by the Education Department of the number of pupils living within and without a three-mile radius of the school who were attending the school and travelling by conveyances other than trains. The board was also | asked to furnish the probable number of I children in the same area who would be j likely to attend the school if conveyance 1 was provided. ! Mr Wild said the department was I evidently endeavouring to arrive at the number of children aLtendiug post-prim-ary schools or intending to, with a view to arriving at a decision regarding conveyances. He had. replied giving tue 111foimation required. Mr Salt remarked that there were 10 boys who were taken into Palmerston North every morning from the Avvaliun district by bus at at cost of £8 per year per child. If there was a bus running into Feiiding lie was sure that half ft the pupils would be attending the Feiiding i riigh School. In addition, there were pupils at Kopano whose parents wished | them to attend the Feiiding High School I but were enable to get Uiem there as -there was no conveyance offering, it was also well-known that pupils i-ii the same localities could not attend a post-primary school at all because their parents could not afford the cost of travelling. Mr Wild said that the points Mr Salt hu’d' stated were quite right and there was also, he said the case 01 Hongotea, where a special bus was provided every morning to take pupils into Palmerston North. There was no doubt that the Feiiding 1 High School would receive a share of these pupils if a conveyance to the town was available. The discussion then closed without further comment. BIBLE CLASS GAMP. The application of the New Zealand Anglican ihblo Class Union lor the use of the school buildings lor a camp at the next Christmas period was granted subject to the usual conditions, fn applying lor the use of the school the union said a search had been made of many sites, but nothing bad been found which ap- i preached redding and its surroundings lor the purposes required. Mr Wild said there would be about 150 students - from the age cf 17 years upwards in the camp. Tue union representatives had inspected the school, and had been enthusiastic over its attractions. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. Mr Wild reported as follows: —The principal matters for report are various improvements that have been carried out about the house and grounds. These include the extra accommodation for coats, boots, working clothes, and boxes at the! house, the asphalting of the path between j the school and the house, and the concreting of a strip at the back of the i house leading to the new building. The work 011 flic building for winter housing j of cattle, the last part of the work planned five years ago, is going on steadily I and when finished will complete the set of farm buildings, or very nearly so. -Other.

matters'referred to in my last report are still requiring attention.' There are also further improvements required to paths, and the present seems a good time to go forward with them. A grant for metal work equipment has been received from the department and the workshop is being fitted up with the new material, an arrangement which marks an advance but does not completely get over the need for a new metal work room. On the farm wheat and oats have been threshed except what is required for chaff. Wheat gave a poor yield of good milling quality, oats an excellent yield and a good sample. Autumn ploughing is going ahead. —The report was adopted and authority given the house committee to carry out certain alterations required at the hostel and to report on others at the next meeting. FANCIERS’ CLUB. COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Feiiding Fanciers’ Club Committee was held recently, when matters in connection with the forthcoming Show were discussed.Mr W. Oliver was in the chair.

Correspondence was placed before the : meeting by the secretary (Mr Shapleski) : from various judges who had agreed to act at the Show. The list is as follows: ; Mr George Thornton (president of the ! North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association), standard or poultry section; Mr L. G. Purton, Palmerston North, pigeons; canaries and cage birds are to be judged by Mr G. Abel, Wellington; cats, Mr E. Saunders, Palmerston North. The i cookery section, which has just recently held a place in the Show, is to be judged by Mrs E. H. Haythorne, Kimbolton. The appointment of judges for the ulility poultry and needlework sections was held over pending replies from the judges approached. Notification was received from Mr T. Collins (Mayor), patron of the club, that he had donated a cup to be awarded to the best cage bird other than the champion, the offer being accepted with thanks. The club this year has been fortunate in that the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association has allotted three North Island championships to be competed for at Feiiding. They are for utility Australorp, utility Ancona, and sky-blue budgerigars. The winner'of these events takes the North Island championship, toI gether with a certificate and a special cash prize of half a guinea. The transport of poultry has been made by the Railway 'Department much cheaper in that it will allow all return trips free of charge. It was reported that a letter bad been forwarded to Mr J. G. Cobbe, M.P., asking him to see if he could arrange for cage . birds and canaries to come under the same agreement.
