BUSINESS GIRLS’ CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The.annual meeting of the Business Girls’ Club was held at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s last evening. Mrs M. H. Oram presided, there being an attendance of about forty. Mrs A. E. Hansford (patroness), Mrs F. Christian (founder and a life member) and Mrs H. Palmer (a vice-president) were among those present. | The report was read and adopted. In moving its adoption, Mrs Oram said that the chib had now existed for 10 years. It was gratifying to be able to state that not only had great progress been made over .that period, but that this year the club had maintained and accelerated that progress. Once again they had lost the services ot very valued and efficient officers, but the vacancies had been efficiently filled, and the committee had been very enthusiastic and hard-working. Although the groups had not bounded ahead, she was sure they would progress when better known. The plan that ten members should arrange the social evenings had proved an excellent one, and Mrs Oram congratulated the girls. She also congratulated the. -club on becoming a life member of the Crippled Children’s Society, which, she said, was a. step in the right direction. The prospects for the club were better than ever at the present time and, judging by the spirit displayed among members, they could look forward to a year as successful as the one they had passed, and to maintaining the high reputation the club enjoyed in the city. “Everybody has a good word for the Business Girls’ Club,” concluded Mrs Oram. Mrs Hansford endorsed Mrs Oram’s remarks. The financial statement, presented by Miss G. Bates, revealed that £3 3s had been donated to the district, nurse fund, £3 3s to the Mayor’s relief fund and the balance-of £3 16s to the club’s relief fund. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES. , i OROUA DOWNS. AYe have just concluded another happy year as fur as AY omen’s Institute matters arc concerned, but in other ways it has been rather sad with all the sickness and sorrow, and . the loss of one of our most valuable members, whose place will he very hard to fill as she was one of our greatest workers on all things eon-! nected with the AVomen’s Institute, j says the annual report of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute. AYe now j have about 60 members and our monthly meetings are well attended, the time .being spent in games,; competitions, . and lectures. 'lhe floral competition has been keenly , contested, all. members showing great interest as in the cooking and hand- 1 craft section. During the yea'r we held' five euchre and dance evenings. The proceeds of which were -equally divided ; between the Women’s Institute and a fund for painting and renovating the hall. Air and Als Funnell gave a 10s points prize for'the end of the‘series and these evenings proved a great success financially, as well a« being well attended. Our bring and buy stall was also a great success, the proceeds going to our federation. A\ 7 e were sorry to have to farewell two families I from our district, namely Mrs L.tvey | and daughters, and Airs Rivers and Ila Rivers, and we hope that our loss will be others gain. There have also been several weddings of members, each receiving a gift from the A\ r omen’s Institute. Our library each month has kept those in attendance quite busy. Our Women’s Institute entered two stalls in the Winter Show, a cake and floral window, the floral stall receiving second place. Those in charge deserve credit for the work they did. A\ 7 e have to thank all sub-committees; for their help and co-operation during the year, which was very happy . Miss Grant and Airs Short paid us at our invitation a short visit, Aliss Grant giving a report of the conference held | in Auckland. At'Christmas time the 1 AY r omen’s Institute held a Christmas tree in the hall for all the children of the district, each receiving a present. The funds for the tree were derived entirely from the disposal of a cushion, given hv Airs Gardner and made by Mrs Oliver. These two members have also during the year purchased all trophies and de&erVe thanks for their good buying. Our quarter hour entertainments have been happily spent in games and novel competitions!. AY'e have now came to the end of our year and we all hope that next ,year will be a still happier one.
