WATER SUPPLY

TERRACE END’S PLIGHT,

WELL SITE CHANGED.

It was reported to the meeting of the Terrace End Progressive Association, last evening, that there had been a shortage of water in that suburb in the past fortnight, Tim chairman (Mr F. J. Oakley) said at his residence no water had been available on frequent occasions till very late in the afternoon, and the position had never been so bad in his experience. Other members said that a similar state of affairs had been noted.

The chairman said he understood that the artesian well, for which a loan was recently authorised, could not be sunk in Manson Street as the underground supply there was not sufficient for the purpose desired and the well would have to be sunk in Vogel Street. It was also stated that the residents of Terrace End were not receiving the supply from the Heretaunga. wells until each evening, supply :n the daytime being received from the gasworks well, which was not sufficient for the needs of the residents.

It was decided to write to the council asking tor the matter to be immediately remedied. STATEMENT CONFIRMED. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) informed the ‘/Standard’/ this morning that it was true that the proposal to sink a well in Manson Street had been abandoned. After a diviner had traversed the area it had been found that the flow would not be sufficient to serve the proposed 3-in main, and it had been decided to sink a bore in Vogel Street, where iiiere are at present several fine floivs. “I understood that the trouble had beer, rectified,” said Mr Mansford in regard to the statement that there was still a shortage of water at Terrace End. Improvements to the well at the gasworks had been completed a week ago and Mr Mansford said he had believed the supply was now satisfactory. He had not been aware of a continuation of the trouble.
