THE FINAL DAY. WILD CHASE BEATS C'USTOS. ROY REED FATALLY INJURED. WELLINGTON, March 17. Tlie autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was corfclucled at Trcntharn to-day in fine, overcast and cool weather. The attendance was good and the totalizator handled £29.439 10s, an increase of £698 10s on St. Patrick’s Day last year. The tot id for the three days was £95,273 10s. The day’s racing was marred by the bad fall of the jockey R. Reed off Hunting Cat. Ho was sent to hospital with serious head injuries and died at 6.5 p.in. Keen racing featured the day, and a special! v keen finish was staged in the North Island Challenge Stakes b< 3 tween the two Ricearfon colts. Wild Chase and Gustos, the former holding on-to a very alight advantage he gained when he made a forward move entering the straight. The President’s Handicap was won by Spiral, whose win was the surprise of the day, while Rereatu leaped the reward of consistency when he won the Suburban Handicap. The other open event was won by After Money. The Champion Hack Cup was won by Maine.

She was always in the lead, and came on to the course proper with Double Gift, Mandamus, l’clmct, and Lianc. Birthday Party and Double Gift came on best, and the former went on to win nicely. Deficit fienished well on the rails, and was a, fair third.

The Stakes provided a thrilling duel between the two-year-olds Wild Chase and i Gustos. Silver Streak anticipated the jump out and got a two-lengths’ break, but it served him for only a turlong, after which the two youngsters raced past him together. Gustos then went solely into the lead, and was followed round the turn and into the straight by Wild Chase and Silver Streak. Wild Chase joined issue with the leader entering the straight, and they had a royal battle all the way home. Both stuck very solidly, and at the finish Wild Chase kept his head in front. Silver Streak was a good third, but never looked likely to get the two in front.

Ho was always well placed, being in the lead for the first-half mile, when it wan taken from him by Tunneilcr, others prominent being Hunting Cat, Big Dook, Korero and Sir Nigel. Hunting Cat fell at the six furlongs, leaving Tunncller, Big Dook, Spiral, Korero, Sir Nigel, and Sunce the most prominent, while Sir Nigel improved his position up to the leader as they ran round the Argentic being toward the rear. Spiral took charge in the straight and was well clear at the last furlong, where Argentic came with a late fast run. He failed, however, to reach the leader. Korero was a fair third.
