(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, March 16. . By defeating Otaki, on Saturday, the local cricket eleven are 11 points in the lead in the championship. With only three more games to play, Shannon is now in an unbeatable position. This is the first time for fourteen years that the championship has boon wone by a local club. The match at Otaki was in doubt up to the iast wicket. Shannon batted first making 96, and Otaki made 94. Mr and Mrs J. ldallain and Mr and Mrs W. H. Gunning aro leaving by the Port Brisbane in April for a trip to the Old Country. Nurse Blake will accompany Mr and Mrs Gunning. There are 15 men at present on the local sustenance register. The Shannon Amateur Athletic. and Cycling Club held a successful wind-up meeting on Friday evening. The events were keenly contested, the Levin Club being well represented, and the meeting was generously supported by the public. The following were the prizewinners + for the season: —Cup presented by Mr N. O’Reilly to local rider, B. Coulter; trophy for points gained over a period of seven nights, B. Coulter, with E. Griffin (Levin) second and J. Tantrum (Shannon) third; Mr Simpson’s trophy for junior girl runner, Rita Christian 1, Doreen Carter 2; junior boys (running), N. Leighton 1, J. 801 l 2, F. Tremewan 3: open field events, C. Tremewan 1, D. Colo 2, C. Young 3; Mr W. Collins’s trophy for junior cyclists, H. Aislabie 1. The president (Mr E. Barber) in thanking the competitors and the public for their support, exprcf6ed_ regret that at times the evening meetings appeared to be on the slow side, but this he asked to be overlooked as the club -was still a young one and there had been quite a number of new members to break into duties new to them; but ho assured everyone that by the experience gained the meetings next season would bo handled much more efficiently. Mr Gappcr, on behalf of the Levin competitors, expressed gratitude at the appreciative-manner in which they had always been rccivod at the meetings. It was a pleasure to know tlie.y had added interest to the ovenings, and the club could rely on their support again next year.
