RURAL RAKINGS. A proposal that a levy bo imposed on wool for advertising and research was made in the presidential address of Mr R. Guinness, retiring pres’dpnt of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, at its annual meeting, and was generally supported by members. The demand was still strong for all good working sorts at a horse sale held at Pukekohe on Friday. Values were firmer. There was an average yarding and buyers were present in good numbers. Aged medium draughts, up to £SO for a gelding ; three-year-old medium draughts, £3l to £39; ordinary farm horses, £lB to £2B 10s; light harness horses, £8 10s to £l6; hacks, £3 to £l2; light unbroken two-year-olds, £l3 to £25. Several good lines of owes from southern Marlborough were offered at the Waiau fair, Canterbury, last week. One consignment of 237 two-tooths from Kekerangu sold at 40s, and several other smaller lines at from 34s 6d to 38s.
There are still isqlated fields of wheat to be seen out in stook in North Canterbury, and they seem to be “weathering the weather” quite well. They are not shooting green as might Ire expected, but this is probably due to the amount of handling'' they have received in between the various storms. Fifteen farmers were fined sums ranging up to £2 at the Putaruru Court the other day for failing to maintain their land free from ragwort. The remarkable growth of grass that has been experienced of late, with an accompanying abundance of clover on some farms, has given cause for concern to several fanners and fatal bloating of cows has taken place.
