GLEN OROUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, Alarch 14.

The annual meeting of the Glen Oroua Women’s Institute was held in. the hall, twenty-five members being present. The newly elected officers were as follow:—President, Mrs L. Thompson; secretary, Mrs S. G. Parlane; treasurer, Mrs J. Saunders; committee, Alesdames W. H. Foster, C. Hamlin, T. Lawlor, Parlane, Payne) Saunders, W. Scott, Sexton, Thompson, and Miss M. Robinson. A competition for the best collection of pickles was won by Mr 6 W. J. Sexton, while that for a novelty pincushion was won by Mrs T. Lawlor. The points prize for the year was won by Airs Lawlor, with Airs A. Robinson runner-up.

A cricket match between the Rongotea and Glen Oroua schoolboys was played at Glen Oroua on Friday afternoon. Glen Oroua batted first to compile 68 runs (N. Ihle 24, I. Parlane 14, T. Hunt 7, Al. Boswell 6), Rongotea replying with 38. (D. Lind 10, M. Slattery 9, W. Mossop 9). Bowling for Rongotea, M. Slattery took 3 wickets for 22 runs and B. Mossop 3 for 27, while the moßt successful bowlers for Glen Oroua were I. Parlane, (3 for 6), C. Webb (2 for 7), and N. Ihle (3 for 19). Mrs Boswell, senr., has returned home after spending a holiday in tho South Island. Airs C. G. Beattie and Miss V. Hobbs have also returned after a motor tour in the Auckland province. Airs L. Poupard and Miss Margaret Poupard are at present on holiday. A meeting of the Ping-Pong Club is to bo held shortly. A dance in connection with the Taikorea Cricket Club is to be held shortly in the Glen Oroua hall. A team of runners from the school is to take part in the Sandon sports next week, but owing to the prevalence of whooping cough the team this year will be much smaller than last year’s.

Mr and Mrs J. Howl returned yesterday after a holiday spent in Wellington.

A Standard six pupil of the local school, Norman Garner, met with a nasty accident while playing cricket at the school shortly before morning assembly on Friday. The unfortunate lad was playing a ball bowled by his brother. The ball rose sharply from the bat to strike the boy’s eye-glasses. which were broken, splinters entering the right eye. First aid was rendered and the Palmerston North Free Ambulance summoned. This was quickly on the scene and the boy was admitted to hospital. Later in the day it was ascertained that there was every hope of the oyesight being saved.
