DANNEVIRKE SHOW

AUSPICIOUS OPENING. RESULTS OF JUDGING. With increased entries, the grounds bathed in sunlight for the greater period of the day, and a gentle breeze blowing, the first day of the 27th Annual Show of the Dannevirke A. and R. Association, yesterday, proved to be a very favourable opening for the two days’ fixture. 'The entries received aggregated 1828 as against 1755 the previous year, not counting the post entries, which increased the total still further. The numbers received for the individual sections were as follow, those for the 1935 show being mentioned first and those for this year’s fixture second: Horses, 308, 298; draughts, 42, 12; cattle, 321, 270; sheep, 268, 339; fleece wool, 37, 40; pigs, 76, 965; dairy produce, 79, 80; dogs, 374, 513; needlework, 250, 180. With many sideshows and a good number of trade exhibits there was much to interest the public, apart from the show classes. The Ruahine Highland Pipe Band was in attendance. Much credit is due to the secretary and staff, who handled their duties in a most efficient way.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS. The judge of the fat cattle, fat sheep and lamb classes, Mr T. V. Caverhill, Masterton said that the fat cattle were a very small entry. However, the quality was exceptionally good. The fat sheep classes were very good, but some exhibits showed signs of wet weather and were not too well finished. “The leg classes I consider to have been the best lot of lambs 1 have ever seen at any show. The four top pairs would average out at about 701 b apiece,” concluded Mr Caverhill.

Mr L. R. Wilton, Masterton, the dairy cattle judge, expressed disappointment that a dairying district such as Dannevirke undoubtedly was could not have been better represented numerically. Mr E. E. Cousins, Colyton, the adjudicator in the Red Poll class, thought that the exhibits were not at their best through having had a rough journey to the show. The champion cow, however, was shown very nearly at her best.

“The Friesians were well represented both in quality and number,” said Mr A. O. Cadwallader, Greytown, the judge. “Though the champion cow is getting up in years, it is still a wonderful dairy type. The champion and reserve champion bulls were also fine specimens and were brought out in excellent condition. The yearling heifer and calf class winners were of great merit, but I was particularly impressed with the winning bull calf, which should develop into a good sire.” The Jerseys, which were judged by Mr H. Salway, Bell Block, were a really good selection of their breed, he said, the females being probably slightly better on the whole than the males. The younger classes were better on the average than the older classes, there being very little to pick and choose between the winners in many events. The milking .Shorthorn judge, Mr E. Wall, Hastings, regretted that there were not more entries in his division, but said that the stock was high in quality and well brought out. Mr B.' H. Slack, Manakau, the Southdown judge, said his classes on the whole were very good and full or Southdown type. . Mr R. C. Cla.rk, Paerata, judge of all the pig classes, thought the Berkshires an exceptionally good display. The sows were a particularly fine class, there being several females worthy of the highest honours. The champion boar was an excellent animal. Competition in the Tamworths, while not so strong numerically, was yet good in quality; The Ln.rge Mlute entries were disappointingly few. the Large Blacks might h&ve been better represented in numbers.
