EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” JANUARY 24, 1906. The winners .at tho second day of the Foxton races had boon Windy, Cassiopca, Submarine, Pangaroa, Silver Shell, Hipporangi and Barca. 'The sum put through the totalisator for the meeting was £16,387 as against £13,614 the previous year. The Wellington Racing Club had made £4OOO to £SOOO profit from its recent meeting. The entries for the Feilding Show, to bo held on February 7, wore 400 in excess of those of the previous year. An announcement was made that the Shah of Persia would cease tho autocratic Government of tho country in favour of an elective system of government. A London cablegram stated that Velazquez’s famous painting, “Venus,” had been acquired for the National Gallery. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce had decided to bring before tho Government authorities' the urgent need for increased accommodation at the local railway station.
